Is it possible to do a J or L cut in Vegas? I couldn't find any information in help. I wanted to shorten an audio on the time line but not the video. Under the video I wanted to slip audio voice over. I can do this in Premiere easily, I am sure can be done in Vegas but I am so knew at Vegas. I hope I'm clear on what I'm asking.

sure. odds are you'll need to ungroup the main set of audio/video (select & hit "u"). Then you can just hit "s" to cut away. You can delete parts of the video you don't want or place new video on a track above.

Yes, very easy to do.

When you drop a clip on the time the video and audio are grouped together. That is why if you shorten one or try to move one, they both shorten or move.

Once you drop the clip on the timeline make sure it is highlighted and press the "U" key. That will remove the clips from the group. You can then shorten them, move them, etc. independently.

Really not a good idea to Ungroup things unless you have to, all too easy to forget to Group them back again and you may need to Ungroup both events each side of the cut and then reGroup both of them.

1) Get you vision cut where you want it
2) Click Ignore Event Grouping icon or Ctl+Shift+U
3) Hold down Alt+Shift and drag the audio cut, this will do a rolling edit of the audio track which is usually what you want.
4) Click Ignore Event Grouping to enable Grouping again or Ctl+Shift+U.
