Questions for Long Time Vegas Pro users

kmaultsby wrote on 1/13/2025, 3:11 PM

Hello all, I am thinking about using Vegas Pro for fast turnaround short projects.  First, let me give you a little short background. First off, I am just a home user editing family events, vacations, Air and Auto shows etc. I have used the Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, until they went subscription base and now DaVinci Resolve.  I have been trying to use Vegas all the back from Version 13 never could get it to work of always crash.  I now have Vegas Pro Post Vegas 21 which looks like it is running very smooth and faster now.  I just started a project, and I will see if I can complete it.  I have the Perpetual license version.  And I have Boris Continuum to use with it. Now the questions.

1. I see there is a Vegas 22 now but no more Vegas Post and Vegas Effects, just Vegas Pro Suite.  If I upgrade, will it remove Vegas Effects and Vegas Image?

2. As mentioned above, I have the Perpetual license version, but what advantages for the subscription version? Basically, is it worth it?

Any advice and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

My advice, (without getting into a long list of details), is that you stick with the current versions of Vegas Pro tools you have running smoothly on your system.. You are quite ok for now.

As a home user editing family events, vacations, Air and Auto shows, You are currently good with what you have.

Nope, you get to keep those. But only as standalone apps. You can't use them from inside Vegas as you could in 21

Vegas Effects and Vegas Image will not work in Vegas Pro 22 but you can continue to use VE and VI in your perpetual licensed Vegas Pro 21. Also, both VE and VI can be used a standalone programs as well.

2. ... but what advantages for the subscription version? Basically, is it worth it?

MAGIX provide the following information about the subscription service:

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/support/article/what-is-the-subscription-service--1639/

https://www.magix.com/us/support/subscription-service/faq/

Personally, I try to avoid subscriptions 'like the plague' unless a subscription is unavoidable. Keep in mind that if you have a Vegas Pro subscription, you need to continue paying even if you're not using the product. If the subscription payment stops, so does your access to Vegas Pro.

While you would still have the perpetual licensed Vegas Pro 21 to go back to, projects (.veg) created in later versions of Vegas Pro (e.g. VP22) will not open in earlier versions including VP21.

Unless there is a feature in Vegas Pro 22 that is a 'must have' for you, I'd go with the advice provided above by Steve.

Thank you all, but I want to make sure I understand if I upgrade to the Vegas Pro 22 suite, can I create a project in Vegas Effects and bring it into Vegas Pro 22?

A video event edited in Vegas Effects can be rendered/exported (e.g. to MP4) and the rendered/exported MP4 imported onto Vegas Pro's timeline as is done with any other media.

Why not get the free trial version of Vegas Pro 22 and test the process for yourself to see if does what you want - the free trial link is at the bottom of VP22's product webpage.

@kmaultsby Hi,

in short -

In VP21 you can right click - Edit in Vegas Effects, Vegas Effects opens & you can do whatever you wish to, Save - Exit closes VE & returns to VP with whatever you changed in VE applied to the event on the VP timeline.

In VP22 the 'Edit in Vegas Effects' option is no longer there & can't be added. So VE (your old VE21) has to be opened separately as a standalone program, you have to Import your media file into that standalone version, do whatever editing you want - Export as MP4 etc. Then import that exported file into VP22.
