QuickTime Rendering

Here is a solution to a problem I posted a while back using VV30a to create a QuickTime movies.

THE PROBLEM:
Whenever I render a QuickTime movie from VV30a using my own custom preset, then playback that moving using QuickTime Player, there will be a couple of second pause or more before playback is resumed whenver I slide the position bar to a new location during playback. The QuickTime Player become unresponsive during this time. It's really not a big deal except that I'm trying to deliver 30 to 40 MB files for broadband internet clients where this becomes an annoyance. And I know this behavior is not correct as I have seen other sites with the same size files with the same quality of video where the couple of second or more pauses do not occur.

A SOLUTION:
I've tried to use QuickTime Player Pro 5.02 to open and export the large AVI files I'm trying to render to QuickTime format. This does not work because QuickTime Player is not able to read AVI files past 4 minutes 42 seconds for any of my AVI files. I've read this is an issue with QuickTime and large AVI files, but I'm not sure what the technical explanation is.

What I have gotten to work is first render a high quality QuickTime movie in VV30a. Then I open this QuickTime movie in QuickTime Player Pro and it will recognize the entire file because it is now a MOV file and not AVI. Then I am able to export to a QuickTime movie with the settings I wanted VV30a to do in the first place but using QuickTime Player Pro. The result is the pausing while moving the position bar during playback in QuickTime Player is completely gone.

SUMMARY:
I'm not sure this will help anyone (it may have even bored some of you - hehe), but I'd sure like to see if SF can address this issue so I don't have to render so many times to get my results. Interestingly, the default presets in VV30a for QuickTime do not exhibit the pausing during playback for rendered files, but I'm not happy with the quality of the default presets in VV30a for QuickTime.

Forget the Vegas QT presets for a moment. Have you tried rendering a QT file from Vegas using the same the exact settings you are using in the QT>QT conversion? Bitrate, codec etc?

this issue has been brought up before. I'm not familiar with the quicktime encoders, but this phenomenon is possibly related to "buffer time", which is a setting in the Windows Media Encoders. maybe the buffering in the VV3 preset is set to a very low number.

as for the issue where QT can't read long AVIs... that is related to the file size of the AVI. QT cannot read the latest version of AVI properly, and so can only read the first 4GB of the AVI file.

I would suggest rendering to Indeo RAW. that way you can render to your final video size (320x240 or whatever) and you can render at 15fps. (I'm assuming you were trying to render to DV before which can't handle smaller frame sizes or frame rates)

with the smaller frame size, and 15 fps, you might be able to stay under the 4GB. (I'm assuming you intend your final QT file to be of a smaller frame size and frame rate)

the Indeo RAW codec is in the Intel codec pack.

anyone else know what's going on with the "delayed reaction" on the seek bar?

SonicEPM, I've tried to create a QT file from VV30a using the same settings I'm now using in QTPro. Same bitrate, resolution, codec, etc.

In QTPro, no matter what settings I try, my exported MOV files work correctly. No matter what I try in VV30a (aside from the default presets), the MOV files pause during playback when I move the slider in QT Player.

Like I said about your default presets for QT, they do not have the pause problem during playback in QT Player. But, I can take one of those working presets, make the single change of sliding the quality setting to High, save it as my own preset, then I get the pause problem during playback in QT Player. Or I can just change the frame rate, or the data rate, and all of my rendered MOV files will have the problem.

Thanks,
Ron
