RAM

I am currently running on 512mb of RAM and Vegas is a little pokey...I'm assuming that's the reason. So, I'd like to buy more RAM.

Since I'm only a student, RAM is pretty expensive so I don't want to buy more than I have to. I have 4 total slots on my motherboard, 2 of which are filled with 256mb DDR RAM. I have two left. I would like to add a gig of RAM, but don't want to prevent myself from adding more in the future. Would Vegas still be able to take advantage of the speed of just one stick of 1gb of RAM? Or would it be in my best intrest to go 2x512mb/2x1g?

Thanks!

Can you be more specific in what you mean by "a little pokey"? Chances are that more RAM will make little difference.

Pokey=slow or low play back rate

Causes:
More than one track and things go down hill. The playback rate drops to like 9. For the most part, a majoirty of effects work well on one track, except for chroma key, light rays, and gaussian blur. It also takes 50 seconds to start up-nothing else open. Transitions make it go pretty slow too.

multitrack audio or video? - sounds fairly normal to me, I upgraded my ram but that's because I do a LOT of RAM rendering.

Hope you don't mind if I chime in here.
I have a gig of ram and I have those same problems.
I too suggest it is not a RAM issue.
If I have one instance of Vegas open and I open a second it takes 2 and a half minutes or sometimes longer for it to load.
If I get more than 5 or 6 tacks on the timeline,---it's Molassesville.
I'm monitoring with in draft setting or it looks like a slide show!
Recenlty brought this to the attention of my friendly neighbourhood computer shop and he replace my systems drive.
Little's changed.
These are the times I wish I was born a nerd.

Most of the things Vegas does impacts the CPU heavily, not so much the RAM, Graphics, or hard drives, as many wish to think.
There are plenty of threads relating to relative CPU speed, hyperthreading, duals, 64-bit and the like, search there first for some real advice and forget about loading ram or buying the latest screaming gaming card or hard drive setup. Just my 2c

Well, my computer is a nice little consumer Dell my family bought and I took over. 2.7gHz processor, 128mb nVidia GeForce FX5200...

Another question though, now that I think about it, Vegas used to work just fine for me...the only time I ran into slugishness was when I got to like 4 tracks and 3d transitions with special effects...this changed when I went to 6c.

So, the only change since non-molassesvile was the upgrade...and a virus on my computer I can't get rid of (only activates itself when I sign online-it might have something to do with it, but I think it was slugish before the virus).

Thanks again!
