RAM Preview shortened to few frames

Several people have posted the same problem I'm having: Select a region of video, maybe 30 seconds long.... just two simple DV tracks with a transition. Use Shift + B or Tools menu to activate RAM preview.... and immediately the region is truncated to a few frames and that's all the RAM preview you get.

I have 1.5 GB of RAM and have tried different allocations of 500 MB, 800MB and 1000MB for RAM preview within Vegas. I have turned off External Monitor. I have no other programs running. I have cleared the cache by resizing the preview window and selecting different resolutions (Incidentally, Sony should have a simple way of clearing cache just as Adobe After Effects does. I use AEX for most of my projects and the RAM preview there works fine.)

None of the suggested solutions posted on the forum have solved my Vegas problem with shortened RAM preview. And I've found no solutions by searching Sony's Support files or online Help.

Any new suggestions? Or is this a bug that Sony needs to fix?

This always works correctly for me and i never clear the cache manually. The only time i ever see anything similar is if i switch to a different program while Vegas is rendering the preview, then switch back to Vegas. It always immediately stops the render as soon as it gets focus again. Is this a bug? Maybe. It's certainly not helpful behavior. I work around it by minimizing whatever other window i had open instead of switching to Vegas. That way Vegas doesn't receive focus immediately and still keeps rendering if it hasn't finished yet.

I continue to suffer the same experience reported by glenng using V4.0 d . . . in fact if I had written that post, it would have been almost identical.

I note however that it doesn't seem to have during the first few renders of an editing session, but seems to kick in after the 3rd or 4th use.

I've also been meaning to ask here how to clear cache memory in this respect . . . I know how for temp internet files associated with the DNS system, but never had ocassion to do it otherwise.

Thanks in anticipation.

Forgot to mention.... I, too, usually get a full RAM preview the first few times I try, but after that it's only a few frames. I have to close and re-open Vegas to get a full preview again.

Incidentally, I'm using Vegas 5.0b Trial version.
