Random zoom in preview

fabianfelder wrote on 7/11/2024, 11:32 AM

Hey there,

I had my problems with V21 in the past (see my last post after updating to 314) but until last week (3rd of July) everything was working fine and fluent ander 315 and newest AMD drivers.

After one week of holiday I wanted to continue working on the project and all I get is new prroblems - even though I made no changes and no new updates have been installed!

8/10 times Vegas crashes when loading my project - most often at 37 to 39% loading status. The screen freezes and the program crashes. Sometimes with error messages, sometimes without (i.e. "WerFault.exe" and "AcroCEF.exe" stopped working). Run the scanning tool and fixed the "WerFault" at least.

Now, the 2/10 times I get to work with Vegas, the preview struggles and stutters and now, sometimes it zoomes in (at least 50%)!

It is not about pan/crop, since I didn't use it on the files. When opening the pan/crop it shows me a perfect picture, but not in the preview. It is not possible to work anymore with these problems and I do not know what to change.

I tried to scale down the resolution as well as the quality but nothing seems to work. Does someone has an idea what could help? I still have alot of work in front of me with this one and new problems come up everyday.

My system is the following:

VEGAS Pro 21 build 315

Windows Version: 10 22H2

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6800

GPU Driver: 32.0.11021.1011 => says my system manager, as I now (18:32h) see that there is a problem with the card.

Thank you very much!

Update:

I just found out that there has been a error with my drivers and Adrenalin Software (don't know why at this point) which is why I reinstalled all drivers. Now Vegas crashes with this error:

Kernelbase is Windows, which isn't a great sign. You are sure this GPU is working properly? It can pass a free benchmark like 3DMark and stress tests?

Hey there, yes it can. I just ran Heaven Benchmark two times as well as Cinebench and no problems have been reported. Furthermore I have to say that if I want to work with a new project, there is no error - but why?

I used a few save-files of my project and all of them give me this problem. There are almost hundred video files included yet, some with fx but I have worked in Vegas on hourlong movies with hundreds of files and never had a problem.

My conclusion for now is, that a problem with Vegas crashes my GPU everytime, as my screen goes dark and Windows Night Mode automaticly turns off.

Thanks for reporting that.

What about trying an uninstall and clean reinstall of a known good AMD driver, 23.7.2? I see reports of issues with the new driver in other apps.

AMD Cleanup utility: https://www.amd.com/en/resources/support-articles/faqs/GPU-601.html

AMD Driver: https://www.amd.com/en/resources/support-articles/release-notes/RN-RAD-WIN-23-7-2.html

Also, Heaven isn't really a useful benchmark anymore- it is too old to tax modern GPUs.

I haven't heard of errors like ""WerFault.exe" and "AcroCEF.exe", the preview being zoomed in, etc. with VEGAS so don't think it's a general issue with the software, especially given you found that "there has been a error with my drivers".

In the Vegas Help Menu, "Check for Driver Updates."

Thanks for the advice but does not work.

Thank you for your advice. I reinstalled the older version of the driver and started Vegas as usual. At first everything seemed to work fine, as it came to load the project to a point of 96%, then it crashed without an error.

I then loaded another project which was fine - even the preview was running smooth now. From there I loaded the other project again, which loaded to 33% and then gave me the following error message, which seems to be the same as mentioned above.

Screen turned black, came back without night mode and now my GPU seems to have a problem again - which I simply don't know how to solve.

EDIT:

Now that there is a problem stated with the GPU, after Vegas shut down initially, Vegas manages to load the project, but now again everything is laggy/stuttering and the zoom effect kicks in.

If you were able to load other projects and not this one, then there appears to be something corrupt in it.

Here is a suggestion going forward. Never ever continually save over the same file name. Do incremental saves. So while you might not be able to open the last project saved, you might and should be able to open an incremental one saved before that problematic .veg file.

I had to rebuild a project I was working on for a few weeks. It was painful to do it, but I learned then to not just "Save", but to "Save As".

On a blank Vegas, can you load all your assets again?

Thank you for your advice, after I had a big issue weeks ago I kept on saving every 10min with saving files named as thailand_v314.1, *_v314.2, *_315.1 and so on, to make sure I have some variation. None of that files work for me right now.

Can you tell me what you mean with assets? I do not use other additional programs. Boris FX Primatte Studio is installed, since it came together with Vegas, but I do not use it. I added some transitions and overlays from FourEditors but those have been put in only in the first quarter of my project and haven't been problematic until now.

fabianfelder wrote on 7/12/2024, 8:51 AM

Oh, and I found out, that when restarting my computer the shown problem with my GPU in the System Manager dissapears, so it does not seem to be a bigger problem but rather one that is caused by Vegas crashing but does no continueing damage to the system.

Kernelbase is still a Windows error...

Do either of the two projects in my signature load and render? If they don't something is very wrong as these have been tested on 100+ machines.

Unrelated, but I used to experience kernalbase.dll errors when starting Vegas. No crashes, but recording in the event log and reliability history.

I found that it was always doing a full VST re-scan and gacking on my Steinberg instruments. I had to exclude them, assuming it is a bug or new behaviour.

I don't think b308 or prior caused this phenomenon, probably because triggering a rescan was an on-demand action.

I went for the Vegas Pro 20 Benchmark and everything worked fine, even the preview ran smooth as always - also: no zooming in effect.

As I mentionend before, I guess that this zooming in takes place because my GPU shuts down after Vegas crashes. The question is why, since other projects of mine - and others - seem to work well.

RogerS wrote on 7/13/2024, 12:22 AM

Thanks for checking. Hmm, so it must be something specific with this project that is causing VEGAS to crash the GPU driver.

If you can narrow it down (copy and paste parts of the timeline to a new VEGAS window or save it in chunks) others might be able to replicate where the problem happens and we'll be closer to getting the program fixed.

fabianfelder wrote on 7/15/2024, 12:02 PM

Alright, I managed to update my BIOS and tried to move my media-files (mp4) from my external usb drive to (C:) because I thought that maybe my old hdd could be the problem (Vegas loading to fast for my external to proceed).

Now the project loads, but does not find the missing files. When I tell Vegas where to find and select the first clip, it asks me if it shall take this folder for all missing files. Guess what, when I say yes please, it does not take the others anyway.

Vegas does not understand where the files are now and when I only take the first six clips to see if it works, I get another error and that's it. Apart from that, all my markers are back again, music and the empty clips are shown as well. I could start working from here, if Vegas could find the files.

Edit:

I tried it with and without the .sfk files - the error, when loading, now occurs because it is not possible to find the missing files.

Reyfox wrote on 7/15/2024, 1:29 PM

I've sometimes have moved files around. When opening a project looking for those files, I've always been able to relink and have them appear on the timeline, then save the project.

Okay guys, thank you very much for your participation in solving my problem but I finally gave up.

Today I started my PC and now Vegas won't load my projects anymore, says they're damaged. Siince I haven't done anything since yesterday agaiin I don't know what changed but I decided to start over again.

Now I have other problems - again, which is why I will open another post in this forum. Once more: thank you very much.

That is correct. So, if it works on other user's computers and not yours, where is the fault? Now, the problem is finding out where and why it doesn't work.
