Re-installed Vegas can't see MP3's

I had some hardware troubles and ended up re-installing XP Pro, including sp1, and all SF software after I had all the XP updates. Now several file formats have gone missing. MainConcept is gone and MP3 can't be loaded, let alone rendered. If I drop them on the timeline they come up as an unsupported file type. I've uninstalled and re-installed all SF software several times now with no change. I can see in the shared plug-ins folder that the MP3 dlls are present, just not being recognized apparently. What can I do? MP3s play fine everywhere else.

Probably all you need to do is re-register from Vegas for MP3 and MPEG. Load a media file into the Vegas timeline (an AVI file will do), then select File | Render As. Select MP3 from the format dropdown, and click Custom. You should see a Register button in the Custom Settings dialog, click it to register for MP3. Do the same for MPEG-2.
