re-rendering mpeg2 files

I have a dvd done on a stand alone player. It's really mucked up as is and I want to reauthor it. I joined and converted the vob files to mpeg2, but there is a lot of junk I need to edit out. I want to know how much of a quality loss will occur when I re-render the files? I converted from vob because I had audio sync issues with v6 when I dropped vobs directly on the time line.

There are some free MPEG2/vob editors including TMPGEnc, Mpg2Cut2, Cuttermaran and Mpeg2Schnitt. I use Womble MPEG Video Wizard usually but I have used the free ones and they work fine.

If you limit your edits to cuts in these programs there is no re-compressing and if not, only the sections using new transitions or filters (mainly available in MPEG Video Wizard) will be re-compressed.
