Read only disc/burning problem

When I went to burn my movie the other day it told me that one of my Dvd's was a read-only disc, which it is most certainly not. So I poped it out, tried it again and got the same message. Then I put that one away and got the next one out and it burned without a problem. Then today when I tried to burn my movie on more of the blank Dvd's all of them came up with the message from before: these are read-only discs. I am so frustrated I feel like getting my money back and writing a nasty letter to Sony. I am sure it is the software, does anybody know why this is happening and/or a solution?

More info please:

1. Version, including release number, of DVD Architect you're using. Be sure you're using the latest update.
2. Brand and model of your DVD burner. Be sure you're using the latest driver / firmware for that burner.
3. Brand and type of blank DVDs you're using.

I wouldn't be too quick to blame DVDA / Sony. There are multiple possible reasons this could be happening, the most likely one being that some of the DVDs are defective. It would also be the easiest to solve -- by simply trying a different brand or even a different batch of the same brand.

When doing a 150 disc run of audio CDs recently i had about 20 discs that Vegas refused to burn. I set them aside and tried them the next day when i was burning data discs in Nero. They were fine. I've also had some DVD blanks that Nero wouldn't touch but DVDA burned on them with no trouble. I've had some discs that any program refused to touch, but once ejected and reinserted were fine. And ... i've had some discs that couldn't be burned in any burner with any software.

Burning discs is far from a polished process. Sometimes it works, sometimes it don't. Ya jus' hafta deal ...

Here's what I did. First I tried my Verbatim DVD+R 120 min video 4.7 GB 1X-8X Speed. The first worked, the next two did not. Then I heard from someone to try -R instead of +R so I ran out and got HP DVD-R 120 min video 4.7 GB 16X Speed. Now I got a new message. Before with Verbatim it was telling me to insert a writable disc, now it would start the burn and then say that the disc was not of a format supported by the drive. I tried three more of the five discs even trying them in the CD drive (I had started using them in the correct DVD drive). The CD drive didn't work either which was no surprise. Now I am really considering getting my money back for the software. Does anybody know what is happening.
PS: I took your advice and updated my software.

DVDAS is good at authoring, not so good at burning.

+R vs. -R - this is going to depend on what format your DVD burner supports. Some burners support burning both formats, others support only one format for burning but may support both for reading.

To isolate whether your problem is with DVDAS, go to www.vso-software.com and download the 30 day free trial of CopyToDVD and see if it will burn your DVD for you. If CopyToDVD has problems, then there may be an issue with your media or your burner (it's not unheard of for a DVD burner to be DOA or to fail).

If CopyToDVD burns for you, then you have a choice to make: try to get your money back for DVDAS, or purchase CopyToDVD just to do your burning.

Lots of folks here have purchased additional software just to handle the burning part - for myself it was because even though I didn't have problems getting DVDA to burn, it was the limitations that it had with regard to burning hybrid DVD's.

That new program didn't work out but not to worry. I went and got some SONY DVD+R 1-16X Speed and burned three without a problem. Thanks for your help and I'm sure I'll need it again, lol.
