Reading new SDXC card on USB 3.0 card reader

Hi all

Just upgraded to VMS 16 and got a new Lumix G85 camera. Now I can shoot and edit in 4K, which is cool.

This question isn't about VMS directly, but I thought maybe you guys might be able to help.

I have a Kingston MobileLite G4 USB 3.0 card reader, I think about 2 years old. When using my SDHC cards from my older SLR camera, files transfer quickly. However, with my newer SDXC (128 GB) card I got for my Lumix G85, file transfer is slower than USB 2.0 rates, and eventually hangs.

I can transfer files by connecting the G85 directly to my PC, but it's a USB 2.0 connection, and while stable, quite slow.

I looked into the Kingtson G4 specs and it says it's compatible with SDXC UHS-I cards, but doesn't say anything about the U3 Speed Class. Is this the issue? I need a reader that works with U3?

The used USB connection port in your hardware has to support U3, but you did nothing say about your hardware and available USB ports.

You mean the ports on my PC? I'm using the front-side USB 3.1 ports, connected to a Gigabyte H270-HD3. It only says they are USB 3.1 ports, isn't that enough?

8 x USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports (4 ports on the back panel, 4 ports available through the internal USB headers)

6 x USB 2.0/1.1 ports (2 ports on the back panel, 4 ports available through the internal USB headers)

Hi @Neel, I'm no expert in card readers, but the biggest difference in class I and class III cards is the write speed. If there is some kind of intelligence in the card reader, than I would then assume a class III capable reader would do better than a class I reader.

I your speed to transfer comparison, I'm sure you have taken into consideration the 4K files from the G85 are going to be much larger than the HD files from your other camera and therefore are going to take longer to transfer at either USB2 or 3.0 ports.

Perhaps a bit of research would help or contacting Kingston support.

@Neel how many other devices are you running in these USB3.1 ports, they are most likely shared?

Contacted Kingston support, and they said my card reader:

it supports UHS-I and II

So I guess I need a card reader that is compatible with UHS-3

Eagle Six, these are my front-side ports, I often swap many different devices - USB stick, Kindle, card reader, iPhone

More confusion. My card says it's UHS-I on the box. But Speed Class 3 (3 inside the U). These are two different things right? The UHS-I and UHS-II are not the same as U1 or U3 class ratings. Is this right?

If this is the case, my Kingston card reader should be fine for this UHS-I card.
