VP22 - Capture problems

atoffd wrote on 7/7/2025, 3:16 PM

I've used Sony Vegas now "VEGAS" for almost 15 years. In the past, I rarely had issues. BUT... Since it was sold to another company "I assume", The reliability has gone downhill. My current version is Vegas Pro 22.0 (build 250). It sucks. I have all the latest, greatest, hardware, software and updates. "not a novice".... I'm looking for another decent editor. I'm done with vegas.

It sucks.

I don't want to be rude, but you took the effort to join the forum and all you had to say was basically "It sucks"? A lot of people are here to help you out, but to simply come here and state what you did is rather pointless.

Please provide some details to your problems so we can try to help you out.

@atoffd I'm sorry to hear your experience. Can you share what isn't working with VEGAS?

Did you use other versions that worked better? It was sold by Sony a decade ago so any since then have been by the same company and development team.

In response to VEGASDerek and RogerS....

Frustrated as hell...

When I buy software, I expect it to work as advertised. I realize there may be the occasional software glitch.

But, when one of the main functions of the software doesn't work as advertised, AND the company won't answer my tickets or return my calls, Who wouldn't be frustrated with the company.

Here is the story. I used Vegas 10.0 extensively many years ago. I was getting into professional editing before life gave me a curve ball and had to re-direct my life... I rarely had any issues from earlier 10.0 version. After many years away from editing, I'm back in the game again. I decided to upgrade to Vegas 22.0. SUPRISE..... I couldn't capture audio from the camera I've used for 10 years. Capturing Video only worked when it wanted to. Most of the time it didn't work. AUDIO never worked. Frustrated, I turned to the Forum to see if others had the same issue. Indeed they did. Often "Could not parse vegas file." error code.

Currently using (Elgato 4k Capture Utility and card).

From what I've seen thus far on the forum, Vegas is aware of the problem but don't seem to be in a hurry to fix the issue. EXCUSE ME..... Isn't Capturing video from a camera a "main function" in Vegas. Why isn't this a priority? Currently, I can't use the software because I can't get the video from the camera. Yes, there are other methods of acquiring the footage, but that's not the point.

JUST FRUSTRATED.

@atoffd said: "there are other methods of acquiring the footage"

Use Vegas 10 to capture your media if you have computer hardware that matches the generation(s) of your media, the camcorder(s), etc.  I currently have Vegas Pro 13 installed on my newest machine, just because, though I don't have firewire or other technologies from the early 2000s. I still keep a couple machines that have firewire and PCI adapters for the capture cards of the era. I won't mention the two open-reel tape recorders.

Do you have computer hardware from the era?

atoffd wrote on 7/8/2025, 2:23 PM

John_dennis,

I sort of have an old computer with the old firewire. It's in the possession of my son who uses it as a server. He is an I.T. pro for a major hospital software firm and works from home.

I recently re-downloaded Vegas 10 and I have problems with that also. See screen captures...

At first, I thought it was some settings somewhere. NOPE. I can use "Windows Clipchamp" to capture footage. Works with no problem.

currently using HDMI out (camera) to HDMI in (capture card)

Look at the Vegas 10 screen shots and tell me what you think.

one is capture screen with lines running through it and one is video preview. Notice the right side 1/3 is black.

What is causing this? looks like a conversion problem to me. So why does "windows Clipchamp" capture just fine.?

There are many posts on this forum from the era that might give you the answer. Many people @johnmeyer used different methods to get exceptional results. Try a search.

Audio Work Around while still using Vegas 22.0

Original problem of getting video to record seems to have resolved itself. I threatened it with a B.F.H. Big F@&$ Hammer.

HOWEVER… getting audio still an issue.
Work Around:

go from headphone jack on camera to mic input on computer. Select proper input and I’ve got sound.
I’m going back in to check all my settings on the Elgato capture software/ card.

Really don’t think that’s the issue.

maybe communication between the two.

RogerS wrote on 7/8/2025, 9:38 PM

How exactly are you doing captures in VEGAS? The VEGAS Capture functionality is dated and hit or miss. For a while there was a third-party add on "VEGAS Stream" that did this which worked well for me.

Most of us use well regarded third-party software like OBS.

atoffd wrote on 7/9/2025, 11:14 AM

RogerS,

In the past... 10+ years ago, I've always used the Sony Vegas "on board" app to get my videos via "IEEE Firewire". With me, even in earlier versions of Vegas I had some issues but I thought it was just me not doing things right. Maybe I didn't know how to capture videos properly. Not anymore.

I have an older "tape based" Sony HVR-V1U Camera. Fantastic camera. I used it professionally for several years. Current version Vegas 22.0 (b.250)

Currently I use HDMI "out" from camera to HDMI "in" to Elgato 4k Capture Utility Card. Specifically, "GAME CAPTURE 4K60 PRO MK.2" with "GAME CAPTURE 4K60 PRO MK.2 AUDIO"... Both show up as video/audio sources in Vegas "capture". However, the audio will not capture... Other programs don't have issues with capturing video or audio so it's not my card. I'm thinking a communication issue between the two products.

To answer your question. Currently I'm using the Vegas Capture with cable from "camera headphone" to "computer mic" input.

The other alternative I've used was "Microsoft Clipchamp". It was free and came with Windows 11. Never had any issues with that. As we speak, I'm testing OBS, "VideoPas by NCH Software" open source freeware. Both seem to work fine. I just don't like the platform. I've tried using an old version of Adobe Premier Pro with no luck. It doesn't even recognize the capture card or maybe it me.... have to have a college degree to use it.

I've always liked the layout of Vegas for basic editing but then go outside to Adobe After Effects if I need something special.

This morning “the great tracker in the sky” recommended a video that she thought I should watch.

Purists will argue about whether and where to upscale interlaced SD video but since you have already decided to use hdmi capture, you might find the discussion of OBS settings useful to get started.

@atoffd You obviously haven't quit yet so I've taken the liberty of altering this thread title to something more meaningful and reflective of your problems. A helpful title might assist someone searching the forum in the future with a similar situation.
