Real monitoring of video

Billy, this isn't about someone "looking down their noses" it's about the application of the appropriate gear for the task at hand.

Like I said, what defines a professional isn't the gear they use. The definitions of professional are:

A) A person following a profession, especially a learned profession.
B) One who earns a living in a given or implied occupation.
C) A skilled practitioner; an expert.

I certainly fall into the A & B definition and probably the C definition as well. I can claim, without any reservation, that I am a "professional."

That said, professionals usually use the best gear they can get their hands on because it does make a difference and they can afford to do so.

Now, you claim that electronics is your hobby, the definition of hobby is:

A) An activity or interest pursued outside one's regular occupation and engaged in primarily for pleasure.

By that definition, I can understand why you wouldn't feel the pressing need to make the investment in higher quality gear.

My yardstick is not the cost of my monitor and I don't believe that anyone here has ever claimed it was. You, however, seem to have turned it around and made it your issue. You're out there in left field all by yourself.

I am a hobbyist trying to preserve 15 year old family videos. The earliest are way out of whack on color, but were hoping not to have to drop the money for a professional monitor. I was hoping to go the BillyBoy method by using my Canopus ADVC 100, but now I am concerned by Spots post that the 100 will brighten the image. If I had $600 to spend I would more than likely use it to buy the ADVC 300. Any ideas on how to compensate for the ADVC100 brightening or what is the cheapest external monitor that I could get?

Mike, it's EVER so slight. Had we not done some comparisons for a DMN shootout, no way would we have ever known. Don't sweat it. Adding a little luma is akin to adding some high treble to a piece of music. A slight add, like they often do at the radio station, adds a slight amount of better detail. In the case of a "professional" setup, it's just something to be aware of. For most things, you'll never notice the diff, except that it IS enough to push a tight signal over the edge if it's close to being not legal. I believe (been a while) that it's a value of 1IRE added, so it's the equivalent of 242/242/242 on output. NOT enough for most anyone to worry about. And if DVD is the end destination, not even a pimple on a flea's butt worth of worry.

Sorry guys, it wasn't my intention to start up another mud-slinging anti-lovefest.
I guess I should have read further down the thread. The first few posts looked helpful.

Ah... wrong again John. Amazing how people jump to conclusions.
I said in the past for me video editing STARTED as a hobby, it has long since advanced far beyond that and provides a comfortable income, thanks for wondering but I doubt you could afford what I charge. About 80% is referrals. I've reached a point I just pick and choose what I want to do, if I feel like doing it. I'm way past the beating the bushes for clients phase.

One of the things I learned is don't blow money on things you don't really need. Some apparently haven't learned that lesson yet. Also, if your lucky, with age comes wisdom. I'm a very good judge of character. That skill serves me well here in the forum. I know who to listen to and who to laugh at.

Does zippygaloo still post here? Haven't looked at the forum for quite a while and was just a bit curious. I always found his breathless rants and use of all caps amusing.

Curious, at least one, perhaps two, of my recent posts on this thread have been deleted (and not by me.)

Well John, you are correct. I reviewed the thread recording I have and there are missing posts on this current thread.

AJP,

Just as well. The post in question was my response to a forum member's post in which he made what I considered to be a legally libelous statement about me. Apparently, the forum moderators wisely deleted the original post and my response to it. I have no problem with this whatsoever. The moderators probably didn't go far enough, but I'm sure they have better things to do than police the forums.

I think we're starting to see the moderators looking at posts and remove them based on whether they contain information of value or not. If you look further up, you'll see where moderators [edits] have been inserted, removing what's not acceptable. I'm glad of it myself. Derogatory comments about people's heritage, lifestyle, color, creed, aren't related to vid, and frankly, Sony could be held liable if they allowed such comments to live.
I for one, am glad that it's starting to happen. On the DMN and DVinfo.net where I'm a moderator of multiple forums, moderators have the power and responsibility to remove these sorts of useless name-calling, bigoted, and irrelevant posts.
As Vegas and other Sony tools grow in popularity, we're seeing a larger community grow. Newcomers to the forums shouldn't have to see this sort of crap.
Notice, this thread goes off-topic at http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=298469&Page=0
Everything prior to that was on topic, relating to vid card output, and had nothing to do with monitor quality, namecalling, or arguing. Hopefully the attentions of the moderators in the future will help avoid this sort of useless diatribe.

Kindof put me in my place too. I need to think before I type. Sorry to any I've offended.
