Real Time Audio Playback

I am encountering problems with Vegas 2.0. I have a project with 16 tracks and wish to hear the play back with a few basic effects, echo, compression e.g.
However, my PC can't handle the processing in real time PIII; 750 hz. w 520. Is there a system that could handle my needs--a balls out PIV e.g.?
Does anyone know of a rule of them about number of tracks + basic processing = what kind of CPU, ram, storage, etc.?
Thank you.

I'm not sure if we could give you a formula to calculate from since there would be way too many variables to consider. However,
you could always pre-render sections of your project if you need to do any critical real-time previewing. This is very fast and
nearly painless.

Hello,

Is very strange, I was worked with a Dual Celeron 533 (NT4), and with this setup run without problem 24 tracks of 24/48 with a lot of Waves plugins, I can open 6 Trueverbs.

What are your sound card?

Bye

Thanks for advice.
With your dual celerons, can you e.g. apply reverb to 16 tracks, individually, each with different settings?
If so, then, I guess, I'm going to have to enter the arms race again!
Many thanks,
