Recap : List of things missing from Pan/Crop/Track Motion

Nat wrote on 4/24/2004, 3:49 PM
A few things are missing from the Pan/Crop and Track Motion Dialog, I post this message to summerize all those things into one post :

1 - Rulers and ruler reference lines are absent (was very useful)
2 - It's impossible to use the keyboard arrows to nudge.
3 - Interpolation lines are absent (that showed the smoothness value)
4 - Preset box is absent from the track motion tool.
5 - In the track motion tools, the menu to select keyframe interpolation is messed up.
6 - In track motion the dark rectangle representing the project's frame is gone.
7 - In Track motion, Lock aspect ratio doesn't work when changing values numerically.

Any official words on what will be fixed in this list ?
Any other user found out something else ?

Thanks,
Nat

Nat,
During Beta, I asked about the arrow nudge because I use that a lot. Apparently there is an instruction for that feature that is incompatible with other new features in the Pan/Crop tool.
As far as the rest, that's for Sony to say something about. I really miss the arrow nudging, but have become pretty proficient moving with the sliders and spinners.
The other thing that bothers me is how it doesn't always update in the preview window in real time, sometimes I have to click on another keyframe or position on the timeline, then back to the original keyframe to see the update.

It's just not very intuitive to have to use the up/down arrow key to nudge the rectangle left and right. I remember the first time I clicked that rectangle and hit the arrow keys. It struck me that Vegas had just done exactly what I expected it to - I didn't even have to think. I wonder how many people had to read the manual / help to figure out how to nudge the pan/crop rectangle in Vegas 2 through 4 vs. Vegas 5.

I've also noticed that you have to turn the Sync Cursor on then off sometimes in order to get the cursor to match up.

The nudging I can get used to. The Preset dropdown returning is almost a Must-Have in my book. I love the new Pan/Crop & Track Motion intefaces, but we need those presets...

I really wish the rulers will be back, it's quite hard to position without them.

In the track motion tool there used to be a dark rectangle representing the frame, it was really useful for PIPs, you could place your shots at the corner of the rectangle....

Any official words on this ?

I'm with you all on this one. The Pan/Crop (and Track Motion) interface just doesn't seem to work right anymore. I've been checking it out whether it is something that I'll just get to grips with over time... and It really does look to me as if certain features of the V4 interface in these tools just isn't there anymore.

I think it's really sad, it's the first time I notice some things missing in a Vegas update. I had bad experiences with Steinberg removing lots of features with each new release of Cubase, I hope this won't be the case with Vegas.
I'm not asking for a fix right away, I can wait, but I really hope the pan/crop and track motion tools get the features they had back.

Another one, in track motion tool, when you change the size of the frame and lock aspect ratio is turned on, this restriction won't be respected, the box will loose it's ratio.

About that dark rectangle that doesn't appear :

The grid seems to replace this, the part representing the frame is darker but the color difference is too subtle and it's hard to see.

Noone mentioned the "F" that was in the pan/crop (track motion too?) that would tell you if the frame/image/video was reversed or not. I miss that. :'(

Or to use up/down to nudge it down/up for that matter. ?!!?!? It is really baffling that Sony thought the numerical fields were somehow a replacement for the simple and intuitive nudge feature that Vegas 2,3 and 4 had. Has anyone heard if they intend to fix this stuff? Other than the missing presets which they admit to messing up on...

Suggested Feature(s):

I have a .PNG for this at this time, but it should be built in. Currently I use it on Track one, where it shows on everything, but it might just be built in as the current grid is, or into the Pan/Crop, separately, or both.

I would like to see a colored grid, mine is a series of red lines making 16 equal sized boxes. It has vertical lines one third down, centered, one third from the bottom, and horizontal lines one third from the left, centered, and one third from the right. As I said, 16 boxes. This is EXTREMELY useful for alignment, in MANY ways. Just let your imagination run wild.

I also have a WHITE grid and a black one, in addition to the red one. Sometimes the red one is hard to see, so I switch out. One day when I get ambitious, I will probably make one that has small alternating dashed lines, alternating red, black, and white, so I won't have to switch out.

I put this on track one and stretch it out the length of the project, and turn it on and off when needed or not. When I render, I just turn it off. It is the handiest thing I have.

Follows the old photographers trick of thirds.

The built in grid overlay can be divided into 16 equal boxes, and shows up on any conceivable background. What is it missing in your mind?

(Although I'm confused by your description of a grid that has lines that are 1/3rd from the edges and yet somehow makes 16 equal sized boxes.)

i would like dragable ruler lines that i can postion as needed.

besides the other items listed ...
wcoxe1 wrote on 5/21/2004, 1:41 PM
Go ahead and draw it. Make the overall box (Frame) and put a line down the middle, both horizontal and vertical, and then draw one 1/3 of the way from each edge all the way around. The total is 16 little boxes. Something like this, but with continuous lines, of course:

---------------
| | | | |
---------------
| | | | |
---------------
| | | | |
---------------
| | | | |
---------------
(Hmm - After I posted this, I noticed that all the spaces between the uprights disappeared. Needs to be spaced out to show the boxes. Sorry.)

The current built in grid doesn't seem to work out well for some reason. I tried it. Something just isn't right. Even though it is changable, it doen't come out right.

The built in grid divides the frame evenly into specified number of vertical / horizontal boxes. You are describing a non-uniform grid. I like yours though. It's a 3x3 grid with center lines. Definitely very useful. But I'm still just hoping we get the stuff from previous versions of Vegas back! :`O

btw - you can use the

tags to make your grid come out right, but type it into a fixed width app like notepad first.
