Recompressed frames on/off in preview

Anyone have this problem? Sometimes my playback from the timeline, through firewire to a TV monitor is jerky and the preview screen in the GUI, which reads "Preview on External Monitor" during a straight-through playback, sometimes adds the red lettering "(Frame Recompressed)." I don't mean that it pops up as it normally should when playing anything other than untreated avi, such as when mpeg or a transition are playing, I mean at random--sometimes it pops on and sometimes not.

This is aggravating because it's hard to precisely time an edit when playback becomes jerky. I'm running a Dell P4 with 2.53Ghz processor and 533 bus, so it's not the system, I don't think. Could it be because I have two firewire drives plugged into the same PCI card? Each drive has part of the footage.

"Preview on External Monitor" during a straight-through playback,

If it is truly "straight through," then this shouldn't happen. However, there are a whole host of subtle situations that can cause Vegas to recompress the video going to the external monitor:

1. Videoscopes. If videoscopes are enabled, the video will be recompressed (because something akin to the Broadcast Colors plugin is applied).

2. If you have any parent/child tracks, and if the parent has something other than the default compositing, then Vegas will recompress the frames, even when nothing is happening.

There may be others, but I am aware of at least these two.

Thanx johnmeyer, I'll troubleshoot those suggestions.
