Recording live HD

I was wondering if anyone has experience recording live HD video with Vegas through Firewire and if you could tell me how it went if so.
I have an HDR-FX1 and I have a project that is going to require me to basically record for 12 hours with very short breaks every hour and a half. Is this possible to reliably do with Vegas?

Do both tape and firewire.... $2.00/hr tapes are very cheap backup!

Doesn't the fx1 turn itself off if it is not actually recording to tape?

For the record, I'm use a V1u for the long recordings to hard drive. In the FX1 user manual it says that if the camera is left in the recording stand-by mode for more than 5 minutes it will exit this mode (the drum stops rotating) but the camera will remain powered on.
