If you use the audio fx as track fx the fx is automatically applied while recording into that track (same is the case if you do a punch-in recording into an empty event while the audio fx is applied on this empty event).
Marco, I guess I should have asked whether I could record just the effects to a separate track so that I could have complete control of the effects return. But now I realize that I can use the volume thread on the effects return to control the volume without using the automation. Thank you.

If you want the old school console type send and return type configuration, use "Insert> Audio Assignable Effects" In my recording engineer 'daze', I rarely printed FX to tape aside from a little compression or limiting on kick, bass and vocals, but that was with analog tape.
