Why are some of my cineform clips in red (still with a thumbnail though) on the timeline? Everything seems to work fine although I have had a few weird black patches outputted during a render.
Because Vegas 9.0x is messed up, and we're all anxiously awaiting 9.0d, and hoping it solves the problems. There are a few people not having problems. Welcome to the unlucky club. :-)
Well at first I thought that too. I assumed it was CineForm, but farss mentioned to me earlier that he has seen the red frames with other codecs. I personally have only seen them with CineForm, but then I've stopped using Vegas 9, and gone back to using Vegas 8c.
However, I've seen other problems related to Vegas 9 b and c: for example putting a raw GH1 (AVCHD) clip on the timeline won't preview correctly. It randomly changes color spaces and zooms in and out on a random, frame-by-frame basis. And none of that happens to me in Vegas 8c. Others have seen that same issue, so I don't think it's my environment, and of course, CineForm isn't involved in that equation at all.
And it seems like every day someone else comes into these forums with some kind of rendering and/or preview problem with Vegas 9, and not all of them are using CineForm. So while we don't KNOW that it's Vegas, the evidence is stacking up.
But then like I said earlier, some people aren't having issues at all. So there's always wiggle room. I may have to eat my words. Won't be the first or last time! :-)
Well... red frames simply means that Vegas is having trouble interpreting the data. This is not only true for vegas but PP as well. Other NLE's like Pinnacle Studio (if you even want to call that a nle :) will show black frames.
Now... WHY vegas is having trouble seeing what's there is anybody's guess. Maybe it's cineform's fault... maybe Vegas.
Don't get me wrong... I'm not placing the blame on cineform (or even Vegas for that matter).... what I'm simply saying is that SOMETHING is not working and I think people are too quick to fire the gun of at the nle in question.
Meanwhile people get their hopes up on the idea the problem will get fixed in the next patch.... and it may not..... depending on where the fault is.
The hard part about it all is the helplessness. I've tried all the workarounds, and nothing works. And neither company is stepping forward to take the blame, or to even just give us an update. So all I can do is wait, and hope.
My biggest fear is that Sony will release Vegas 10 before I ever get a chance to use the Vegas 9 that I paid for...
