Red Scarlet Dragon 5K file support in VegasPro 13?

wjauch wrote on 10/1/2014, 8:13 PM
I am on the latest build of Vegas Pro13. I tried an internet downloaded Red Dragon Epic 6K file, works in Vegas. For a future edit I need to edit Red 5K shot on Scarlet Dragon. I tried a test file, Vegas can't open it (can't drag to timeline). I tried a second file, same result. I opened the files in Red's RedCine-X, they open fine.
My questions are two:
1) Has anyone had success with Red Dragon Scarlet 5K files in Vegas Pro13?
2) Would someone please test whether the file works on their system? Full file 900MB is here: http://we.tl/I8yh1vlOql , a short trim from RedCine-X 60MB (which I also cann't open) is here:

Thanks in advance

If you look at the vegas spec sheet, you would see that vegas has a 4096x4096 limit. Your footage is 5120x2700. I would suggest using REDCINE-X and reduce your image size using the crop feature or reduce the camera record size to 4K (4096x2160) if you want to use Vegas's native R3D support.

I wrote this for Sony RAW viewer, but you could experiment with this route too, just change the settings in cine-x to roughly match. This process would handle your footage in ACES color space, but do some serious tests before settling on a workflow.

"Here is the workflow I used on the clip you uploaded.

CineX Export

Export format OpenEXR

Video No Compression or ZIP or PIX, Use ACES

ADD Checked? - not sure about this one.

Export to folder

Vegas:
Import EXR image sequence, then change the clip media color space to ACES

Change project settings to match clip format, and color space to 32-bit full, View transform to ACES RRT (sRGB)

In the project media, right click the EXR sequence and select Create Proxy.

From here you can drag the clip to the timeline and use 32-bit effects only. Unless you have a super high end display system out of your computer, you will be looking at a transform to the sRGB color space. Digital Cinema will have more range.

You should be able to edit the footage and play it back in Best/Good quarter setting at full frame rate. If not, then you can switch to Preview Auto to make edits at full frame rate via the proxy file, then switch back to best to see the details and colors.

To render out create a new render profile that is the size you want ,for example 1080p@25fps, and under the project tab choose color space ACES RRT 709. I used Sony AVC and not MC mp4.

This way your edited project will retain the info the camera is capable of capturing, and you can output to any format that is required, including DCP with the right codec loaded.

Vegas cannot handle the Red Dragon file formats as yet!
wjauch wrote on 10/2/2014, 8:28 AM
Thank you Steve, but per Sony support Vegas does handle Dragon footage. Scroll down on this page for a link to download a 6K Dragon file, my Vegas can handle this file. My question is why it does not handle my 5K file
wjauch wrote on 10/2/2014, 8:31 AM
Astar, thanks for your reply. I will try your suggestion. However Vegas can handle Dragon 6K . See , scroll down to download the 6K Dragon file, Vegas handles it fine. My question is why I can't open the Dragon 5K file (when Dragon 6K works).I did email Sony support also

I tried your footage and didn't work for me either: VP 13
wjauch wrote on 10/2/2014, 10:17 AM
wwjd, thanks for confirming that it is not just my Vegas. I also contacted support at Red in case there has been a change in Red Dragon file type of some sort, that perhaps Sony doesn't yet support

wjauch,

Did vegas resize the footage from dragon 6K to 4096x2160 or did you do that manually?
I am guessing that Vegas can only export at 4096x2160 too.

I am curious to how the 5k dragon issue works out, do give an update if you know anything more.

I'm finding a bunch of conversion tools for R3D out there... some free, some not, some may be malware...

VMP, with the 6K dragon file, once dropped onto timeline, Vegas automatically selects project properties as 4K. I assume will only render as 4K out
wjauch wrote on 10/2/2014, 1:13 PM
wwjd, thanks. I am sticking to RedCine-X for conversion, that one is not malware. Hopefully Sony support will get back to me with further info.

Ah ok wjauch.

Is there no aliasing etc due to downsampling?

wjauch wrote on 10/2/2014, 3:29 PM
VMP. I didn't see any, but I didn't render an output from the 6K, just looked at it on part of laptop screen. I wouldn't expect any artefact from downsampling, but FWIW once on a 4K Red shot which included venetian blinds, bluray output was great, DVD showed obvious moire

Sony needs to release an 8K patch for PRO13 NOW, instead of waiting a year for another new version.

Set, thanks for confirming that file won't open in your Vegas. As it opens in RedCine-X and Davinci Resolve Lite, it seems there is no problem with the actual r3d file
wjauch wrote on 10/2/2014, 7:44 PM
Astar, thanks for your detailed instructions. I got it to work, now waiting for an answer from Sony support
wjauch wrote on 10/4/2014, 9:20 AM
I have had several emails back and forth with Red support, they indicate no problem with my Scarlet Dragon file. Nothing as yet from Sony support (issue reported to Sony Wednesday). Does anyone know how long does it usually take Sony tech support to respond?
NormanPCN wrote on 10/4/2014, 10:54 AM
It probably depends on what you are asking SCS support. I have only reported problems that support cannot really answer. Only a developer can. In those cases it has normally taken a month, yes month, to get some kind of response.

That response is normally, we have entered the issue in our database for future consideration.

Received this reply today from Sony. Hoping the fix comes sooner rather than later.

"Thank you for contacting Sony Creative Software.

This is listed as a known issue in our database, to be resolved in a future application update.

Thank you for reporting this issue.

If you still have a follow-up question on this particular incident, please feel free to update it. If you have a completely different question, please create a new incident.

Sad but true.

One has to question SCS ability to fix things. Take the V13 WaveHammer activation problem. 6 months after release and it still is unfixed. If they can't quickly fix a simple activation issue then what does that say about real functional problems.
