Remember When...

The Vegas forum was filled more with questions or tips on how to edit with Vegas? The best cases for air travel. Copyright issues. Filming around gov't sites.

Or like, how do I do the handwriting effect or how best to sling a camera in a helicopter or how to do difference masking or how to make video look like Kodachrome or how to submit a video to a film festical or...?

Now it is filled with questions on how to work around bugs, why past features no longer work, when the next update/bug fixes will be released, why vendors are abandoning Vegas.

I guess I'm just missing the good old days and pondering the reason for the marked change in the forum discussion.

Maybe I just need to rethink my attitude toward the forum.

1. The tone has changed since there is no longer a need to be a verified owner in order to join the forum. There are a lot of gamers making one-off posts here now and less of a community feel.

2. Some of the stalwarts like Spot, farss, John Meyer etc. have gone or all but gone. I think quite a few regulars have jumped ship to other programs as their primary NLE, presumably as a result of instability and slowing development under SCS in recent years.

3. The spaced out "mobile-1st/desktop-2nd" forum platform has some nice features but in my opinion is just too spaced out for comfortable browsing and chat on a desktop.

4. The changeover from SCS to Magix hasn't really settled down yet. We still need another update or 2 to get VP14 to a stable state, and then we need substantial improvements like modern GPU support, an overhaul of colour-correction and grading, workflow enhancements and extended/improved support for pro formats. And the situation with getting bundled plugins to work still seems to be all over the place.

very well put nick.

1 - don't suppose one can do much about it but having a closed shop did encourage community. as for gamers, it seems all they're concerned with in general is obscure / proprietary codecs not working out of the box and not bothering reading the numerous threads related to such problems.

2 - i've moved to resolve as my primary nle for the reasons you've stated. i could have lived with the slow development but first the dithering about its future had me looking for an alternative, and when resolve added editing, and was free, it was an irresistible temptation, and the initial release and subsequent problems with 14 just didn't make it worthwhile bothering with.

3 - the forum is not conducive to browsing and certainly not user friendly. it's more consumer than professionally orientated and as such not a place i want to linger.

4 - there's a lot that needs to be done with vegas for it to even begin being what it was. unfortunately time is not on its side and the longer the NEW problems persist the less likely it is that vegas will ever generate the respect and loyalty it once had.

i'm still here because i really do enjoy editing with vegas, it's fast, flexible, and WAS supported by a great number of individuals who contributed their time and energy in both helping others and writing scripts that made vegas unique amongst nle's. all this is slowly ebbing away and magix doesn't in the least interested in keeping this community onside.

as i've written before, i'll look at 15 but it's going to have to be a lot more than 13 and without the problems of 14 regarding plugins, gpu, etc.,

meanwhile nick, thanks for your efforts and time - they are appreciated.

I first came to this forum over 11 years ago looking for help with Vegas Movie Studio 4 and was welcomed with open armes and given all the help I needed. After a few more versions of movie studio I eventualy went to pro with Version 7 and have only missed one upgrade version (12), now I'm on VP14. I may not have always participated in the conversations but I was always checking in and reading the comments and searching for help when I needed it. I learned a lot here in the past.

I'm not a professional, I edit because I love what I do and the consumer versions are not enough for me. I seek out the best in whatever I do.

Yes, I remember when; you could get answers to your questions, Grazie first talked about Skype, farss helped me with my problems, Spot had his parachuting accident. It used to be like family here. Today, it's not.

If I was a newcomer now, I would seek out my answers and never look back.

Those people mentioned seemed to have their soul pulsing in Vegas. Very exciting times they were.
