Try opening the Event Pan/Crop window that has the effect, right click in the middle of the clip, then choose 'Restore', and it should be as easy as that. Let us know if that helps. Cin

I must be missing something: clicking Restore just adds more keyframes to the effect. I can stop the pan/zoom by deleting the keyframes but that leaves the effect icon on the image.

I want to get rid of the effect entirely -- no icon on the image in the timeline, no keyframes, just a plain slide.

Highlight all the keyframes and press Delete to get rid of them. Move the cursor back to the beginning of the event or turn off sync cursor. Now do the right-mouse-button click and restore thing.
