Renaming files

MarkG wrote on 11/2/2004, 2:32 AM
Hi. Thanks for reading my message and providing whatever advice you can. I moved a number of video files to a new folder (in Explorer). Is there an easy way to rename all the files I moved in Vegas? For example, I want to change the file names of all 50 files from "Tape 10" to "Tape 11". I imagine after each file will be a sequential file number like they currently have and that's ok. Thanks

Mark G

You're better off doing this in Windows. There are several programs out there that will deal with renaming multiple files (including using the DOS prompt).

Windows XP does this. Just select them all, press F2 and type your new name, it will name the files the same and append a number. As Ed states, there are a jillion free utilities that will also rename any way you can imagine.

The absolute best thing I have seen is:

http://www.download.com/A-F-5-Rename-your-files/3000-2248-10135890.html?tag=lst-0-1

It's free and does just about anything. It's better than the Windows rename scheme, which is handy. But, that won't work if you're trying to import an image sequence.

The above link's utility works perfectly.

-F-5-Rename-your-files

I downloaded and tried this, and it is indeed quite good. It has one of the highest user ratings I have seen for a utility. Very simple to use.

This is a keeper.

Kent,

The utility for renaming is brilliant. Do you have a similarly great utility for finding and removing duplicate files?

I know DOS .. a bit . .I FORGOT! I recently incorrectly "left" the previous tape name/date and then went onto manually rename some 60 odd stills! What a twit! . . I forgot about DOS and the option for renaming within XP . . I can't BELIEVE I did this!

Idea: Perhaps Vegas can have a option to do this . .yes, AFTER the capture session.

Grazie

Grazie, Get the utility that Kent recommended. I downloaded it yesterday and am instantly "in love" (although I'm easy). I have never seen a utility with such a high user satisfaction on download.com.

No. Sorry.

I know Norton Utilities back in the 16 bit days had a utility for this, but as time passes, Norton Utulities becomes less and less "required." I think maybe Windows has a Disk Cleanup utility which I think *may* do this, but I can't remember.

You could search My Computer, fixed drives for the filename string, then sort your search findings by filename, them remove as appropriate, but I don't think this is what you're looking for... :)

I have an old, old utility that I still use called "Clonemaster" and it works well, although slowly. It finds duplicates the only sure way, via a CRC check. I was just hoping to find something with a better UI and faster code.

Duplicate file finder free

I haven't tried it yet but looks O.K. lots of options.
