render confusion

I have HD .mov files (1280X720) that had to have the file name changed to .mp4 in order to bring audio into the timeline along with the video properly. After cutting I render back to .mov files and the file grow by about five times it's original size. If I try a custom HD setting with AAC/AVC it dosen't render properly. It was my (limited) understanding that if you rendered out to the same codec from original file the render was quick and if anything reduced in size.

Thanks in advanced for any help understanding this-

Not that I can answer this, but what's the question here?

I think he wants to know if his understanding is correct. Which it is not. Not by a long shot.

I think he believes that smart render works for any codec, which it does not. And rendering back to the same codec can produce files of greatly varying size depending on bit-rate.

Perhaps someone with a bit more time on their hands can go into that further. I've got to get back to work.

I suspect that the issue arises because .mov is simply a container, much the same as AVI. Both can contain any variation of resolution, bitrate, bitdepth, chroma sampling and codec. And that's just the video part :)
All that the OP is saying is he rendered back to the same container at the same resolution. The most significant impact on file size would come from the codec used, keeping in mind that some are fixed bitrate.
