Render Setting

HobieOne wrote on 3/12/2025, 4:54 AM

As a complete amateur, I just cannot get my head around which render settings are best for my holiday videos.  I’m using Vegas Pro21 and rendering using Magix AVC/AAC MP4 template but can never figure out the best format to use with this template.

When filming I’m using a PAL video setting 50fps progressive,1920 x 1080 x32 MP4.

Can anyone give me a not too technical suggestion – I’m something of a Luddite. Also, am I using a suitable template or should I be using Magix HEVC/AAC MP4?

Any help appreciated.

Based on the settings in the project's preferences, the most suitable Render As templates for the project are highlighted with an equals sign = just to the left of the template.

AVC/AAC is a widely used and popular format whereas HEVC is a development on AVC that offers a smaller file size without losing quality; however, HEVC has greater compression that AVC to achieve the smaller file size which, depending on the device on which the render is going to be played back on, may or may not result some stuttering on playback. Try experimenting with rendering with both formats and compare them on the device on which is going to be used for playback.

@HobieOne Hi, in simple terms, when you dragged your video (media) into Vegas it will have asked you if you want to match the project settings to the media. Presumably you said yes

In the Project Video Properties these top boxes are the ones to look at, leave the ones below at the default.

In the render window some templates will have an = sign next to them, those are the ones that match your project, just choose one, If there isn't one with an = sign, choose one of the correct size which there should be for your 1920 x 1080 media, open Customize Template & change what I've marked. The Project AR (aspect ratio)& frame fate can be seen on the Vegas UI.

PS, I've screen captured AVC but reading your comment you need the one below HEVC.

Worse still if you are playing your renders on a TV a few years old it may not play HEVC. At least that's my experience.

Play safe & render to 1280×720p @ 50p. .mp4. This should play on older TV's via USB
