Render setting help needed.

Because of preview problems, I rendered both my video tracks to HD1080 60i Avid DNxHD 145 8bit.. Then when finished editing I rendered to BD without a problem. However, my DVD render doesn't look very good. The lead is wearing a checkered dress and I'm getting a lot of moire pattern stuff going on. I rendered it for DVD using main concept Mpeg2 DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen. Should I be using something else because I used DNxHD?

Some moire on a checkered dress in standard definition video is probably inevitable. Make sure that you selected "interpolate" as the deinterlace method in the project properties, also use "best" for rendering quality.

Make sure your minimum bit rate is set to 4200k, make sure your "full resolution render quality" is set to BEST. I also apply a filter package like this one https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bz4okF1D_ux5c0Y2VnZIZ05xckU/edit?usp=sharing
If you want slightly better results, use Handbrake to downsize the DNxHD file first, bring it into Vegas and render it out to DVD. This all wont completely remove the moiré but it will help.

OldSmoke,

What is that hd2sd.sfpreset file and how is it used. Also what exactly would i downsize it to with handbrake?

The file is a filter package that can be installed with the Sony Preset Manager. It will show up in your "Filter Packages" folder once installed and contains a "Levels", "Unsharp Mask" and "Convolution Kernel" FX.

The Handbrake method is a bit more difficult but I got better results with it. I am sure there are more knowledgeable HB users here and maybe there is a better way of doing but here it goes:

You already have the DNxHD file, so just drag it into HB.

I use these video settings in HB:

I then put the rendered file into a new project, open the media properties tab of that file and set the pixel aspect ratio to "1.2121 (NTSC DV Widescreen)"
I also change the project properties to "1.2121 (NTSC DV Widescreen)" and then I render it out with the corresponding DVDA template.

I'll give handbrake a try this evening.

Thanks,

By the way I see you web optimized selected in handbrake... was that intentional?
OldSmoke wrote on 5/23/2014, 8:13 PM
Nope. No intention there. I think you can leave it unchecked but I think it doesn't make a difference. As I said, I am not "that" knowledgeable with HB.
