Render speed improvements 👍👍

Gid wrote on 8/10/2024, 6:06 AM

For a long time I used (MMS) Magix Movie Studio (formerly Movie Edit Pro), I upgraded to VP18, 19, 20, 21 & now 22.

For quite a while I still used MMS to render quick simple projects because the Infusion engine was 3-4 times faster than VP, but the most recent versions of VP 21 & 22 have seen significant improvements in render times (& I don't remember when VP last crashed 👍)

A little test in the Magix forum because VPX isn't showing 'Hardware encoding'. (I don't use VPX) ..

The same UHD clip on a 9:16 1920x1080 (Instagram stories project), sectioned/match output aspect.

MMS2025 - 1min 31secs

VPX14 - 8min 46secs (No Hardware Encoding, this is fixed in VPX16 I believe)

--------------------

Vegas 22 - Magix AVC - 1min 36secs

Vegas 22 - Voukoder - 1min 12secs

I just want to post something positive for a change 👍👍

@Gid thanks for posting that! Does that mean you won't be using MMS any more? 😉

For me, as long as the rendering time isn't great, I am good. If I see my hardware being used, that's good. If the project takes a long time to render (ever add Vegas Titles & Text?) I go do something else, like stretch, grab something I shouldn't be eating, and/or contemplate life...

Vegas can now playback 4K HEVC at up to 510fps, the limit is not Vegas, it's a limit of current GPU decoders, no 'narrow pipes' anymore, but this 'larger pipeline' doesn't currently extend all the way to and via the encoder, it loses a lot of steam, but this was always said to be a multipart project.

I assume that the same engineers who developed the Infusion engine, now are participating in the development of the new video engine in Vegas.

@Reyfox I only open it now to test things mentioned on the Magix forum or to help other people, The upgrade this yr to 2025 only cost £29 but I very much doubt I'll be upgrading again. I won't list the reasons why VP is also so much better in many other ways.

@UltraVista I noticed the difference in VP21, for a long time I used AVC (as many others did), I bought a GoPro11 a couple of yrs ago that only creates HEVC files, so with the VP improvements I swapped my phone over to HEVC also to keep both formats the same. I can play, edit etc. them perfectly.. 👍

@Gid, the entry price of MMS is great for those that just want to edit and don't need the complexity of Vegas Pro. Again, the price is right with what they offer. I always recommend it to someone who wants to do more with their videos than what they can do on the cellphone app.

I'll have to try HEVC and see how it goes on my computer since you say things are working good!

@Reyfox I bought my mate MMS as he's a complete newby to video editing & wanted to start making some simple YT vids. I think it was good for me when I started as the masking is solely done with B/W masks/images & despite the track order being upside down you can visually see what is happening,

Yes, VP 21 after build 300 is when the first major update of the new video engine was installed, and they still have more stuff being cooked up behind the scenes, so it only gets better from here!

I also found a very welcome playback improvement on a test sample (50 fps hevc) that on earlier version only played at 2 or less fps. Seriously great.

However, the zig zag (renders a bit, stops, renders a bit again etc) render is still there with Nvidia GPU render. The CPU, AMD, QSV rendering doesn't show this issue.

I'm wondering is this something that will also be improved in any future "engine" work ?

Try Voukoder for Vegas to render, it will render much faster (no pausing) and with better quality using your NVIDIA. I just did again a compare test Magix 2160p50 render against Voukoder with same settings, I got an average of 42fps for Magix and 60fps with Voukoder.

I'm afraid...I mentioned this already several times, and this Magix rendering issue with NVIDIA lasts already several Vegasversions. Mostly annoying is the fact that this pausing becomes visible as pulsing artifacts in the finished render.

@johnny-s These are Nvidia recommend 'starting point' settings, the * next to B frames is a recommendation to use B frames with natural video and low motion games, so with that you can draw your own conclusions as to when B frames should not be used. GoPro as an example does not use B frames and those cameras are often used for fast motion, but that's not necessarily the reason.

johnny-s wrote on 8/14/2024, 2:46 AM

Hi @UltraVista, that's a very useful table that I haven't seen before, thank you.

"GoPro as an example does not use B frames and those cameras are often used for fast motion, but that's not necessarily the reason."

That's a very good explanation with respect as to when to not use B frames.

I don't have action cams, just mirrorless, so my conservative use of 2-4 B frames. I don't like using long I frame gap, default of 300 in zvoukoder, so I will probably settle on something like 50 - 100 gop.
