render to AVI, then MPEG2 question

in my latest project, i did a render to NTSC DV AVI and saved markers. since i needed to print to tape and also create a dvd, i thought this would save some time in rendering.

for print to tape, i created a new project and added the rendered AVI. worked just fine and PTT didn't have to do much work.

for final render to MPEG2 for dvd, i created a new project and again added the rendered AVI. the render to MPEG2 was quick, but when i imported into DVDA, i noticed that my chapters were missing. i'm pretty sure i had save markers on for both renders.

so, is there a way to render to AVI, then use that file to render to MPEG2, without losing the markers to use as chapters in DVDA?

Look for files that have the same name as your MPEG file, but with the extension SFL. If you rename your MPEG file, you need to rename this file as well, or DVDA won't find it. Same caution about copying or moving files: you have to copy or move the SFL as well.

If for some reason the SFL is missing, you can re-create it without re-rendering anything. Just open the original project in Vegas and then run this script:

DVDA chapter from Vegas marker

If you have Vegas 5.0, you must change the line that reads "import SonicFoundry.Vegas;" to "import Sony.Vegas;"

Simply renaming the .sfl file won't work if you've renamed the media file. To ensure validity of the metadata stored in a .sfl file, it also contains the original media filename in its internal format. This won't match your media file after you've renamed it so any metadata in the .sfl file will be ignored.

We are aware of this and it will be fixed in the next Vegas 5 update.

Slam:

If you rendered to AVI then Rendered to MPEG2 in DVDA, DVDA would recognise the chapters in the AVI.

Because you rendered the AVI to MPEG2 in Vegeas I THINK that DVDA won't see the chapters as it's a 2nd generation file.

Again I only think this is so, as DVDA wouldn't recognise markers in a 2nd rendered AVI file I did.

I could have sworn that I did this successfully in the past (with Vegas 4.0d), but I guess not.

andy - great advice about rendering to mpeg2 in dvda. now, i can use vegas to render to avi to use with print to tape. then, bring in that avi to dvda to make my dvds. sweet!
