Rendered AVI file corrupted - weird one!

Using Vegas 9c.
I have an 8minute long project. Using SD avi video.
When I render to AVI format, using all the defaults, I can see what looks like a digital drop-out glitch at 4:42.
I do not see this in the preview window (Best/Full) or in the trimmer when viewing the clip at that point.
If I move that clip and put another clip spanning the 4:42 mark and re-render to AVI: same thing...a digital glitch at that point.
No matter what I put on the timeline, there is a glitch in the rendered AVI always at 4;42.
When I render to WMV or MOV I do not see it.
When I upload that AVI to YouTube...the YouTube converter renders to mp4 without errors....but the rendered mp4 video is only....4:42 in length.

So. What could be happening in this veg to cause this behavior. I've never seen anything remotely like it before.

Are you reviewing down to the individual frame level?

I sometimes feed a set-top DVD recorder via the print to tape function, and recently I encountered a two second audio dropout at the same point on repeated renders. When i finally went to examining at the frame level, I found one video frame that had four glitched patches showing on the frame.

I deleted that individual frame and relaced it with an adjacent frame and no more audio problems. Not your exact problem, but strange things can happen that are not noticable in the reviews.

Strange as it may seem, an AVI video frame can be corrupt without showing any visible artifacts in the preview.

Try clipping out one frame at a time until you find the culprit(s). If you can live without it, fine.

Otherwise, there are repair utilities available. If you have Scenealyzer, I have found its built-in repair works well in some cases.

From Edward Troxel's site:

Post subject: Rendered AVI only shows as 4:42 in other players

By default Vegas renders OpenDML AVI files, also known as ODML or AVI 2. This allows AVI's to overcome their historical 2 GB file size limitation while retaining partial compatibility with older readers that don't fully understand the new format. In the sake of ultimate backwards (partial) compatibility, the format limits the amount of a data older readers can access to the first 1 GB of an OpenDML AVI.

In most cases, Window Media Player should be able to see the entire duration of a large OpenDML AVI file rendered by Vegas. However, in Options => Preferences... => General, make sure that "Strictly conform to AVI2 specification" is not checked (unchecked is the default). If it is checked, Windows Media Player will most certainly only see the first 1 GB of the file, which for DV comes out to about 4 1/2 minutes.

As of version 5.0.2, QuickTime for Windows still doesn't completely handle large OpenDML AVI files, so it will only see the first 1 GB (4 1/2 minutes of DV). RealPlayer is also limited in this way. In fact, most readers not based on Microsoft's DirectShow will probably show this behaviour, and those that are based on DirectShow will show it as well if "Strictly conform to AVI2 specification" is checked in Vegas.

If OpenDML .avi is unchecked, Vegas will write standard AVI's that should be fully compatible with all AVI readers. However, they would then be limited to 2 GB in size.

However, the behavior I am seeing is not specific to a specific video clip! No matter WHAT clip I put in that section of the timeline, the generated avi (of the entire project) always has that glitch at the same time.

Also..I can shorten the overall length of the project from 8mins to 6mins, for example. Same results: a rendered glitch at 4:42.

Also also...I can create a loop region surrounding that time point, and render just the loop region to AVI. No glitch.

What Codec are you using for the AVI?
