Rendered AVI skipping - like a bad DVD? Why?

Does anybody have any ideas why the following could possibly happen?

I have a project of 4m 55s in length. I render to default DV AVI. (done this a million times in exactly the same way. Never a problem.)

On playback in WMP (and Vegas, too), the video skips, stutters and the audio drops out at exactly 3:21, without fail.

Here's the curious part: the rendered AVI does this regardless of what clips or audio occupy that segment of the timeline! I can remove the audio track completely and the video still stutters and skips. I can remove the video, and the music skips and stutters. Always from 3:21 to 3:31.

Try rendering that segment again in the original project. ie; put the finished render on the timeline of the original project, cut out all audio from the project, leaving only audio from the render, excepting for the 10 seconds in which it's bad.
you may have had a buffer underrun, bad HDD sector, or something similar.
Fixing it this way (assuming the original project doesn't stutter at this point) won't cost you any quality, and virtually zero time.

Thanks, Spot.

I, too, suspect it was a bad sector or some other hardware glitch.

I copied the problem .avi from one directory to another and it played fine. I then deleted the original problem .avi and its. sfl file, and re-rendered. The new file also played fine.
