Rendered Videos Not Sendable Through iMessage

naynaybakebake wrote on 11/14/2016, 6:02 PM

Whenever I create a video in Sony Vegas Pro 13, I am unable to send it in any form of text or message, regardless of length, resolution, file size, etc. However, when I insert my rendered video (my computer has no trouble rendering the video in Vegas) into Windows Movie Maker or iMovie, and re-render it with the same render settings, I am able to send it perfectly fine. Whether it's a 720p 184kb video or a long HD video, if it was made in Vegas, all of my devices refuse to deliver it through any method. I would rather not upload short videos to YouTube in order to send them to friends, and Windows Movie Maker is garbage. Am I doing something wrong, or is this even an issue that can be addressed?

Thanks.

I don't know what the other 99.386% of the world does, but it would seem to me that sending videos as attachments in a texting application wouldn't be a good idea even if iMessage allows it. In my house, I upload the files to my iCloud storage or dropbox at a bit rate that plays nicely on a portable device and text the link to people that might be interested.

What render settings do you use in Vegas and what render settings do you use in iMovie?

In most cases I would agree with you, however quality is not my top concern here, as the videos I am sending are only about 15-20 seconds long. I'm sending them daily in a group message, and it's much more convenient to just send the video rather than a link. The resolution I'd like to use is 1800x1152 (1.5 times iPad resolution), with a bitrate of about 3,000kb/s, and saved in MP4 format, although I have tried much lower settings with no luck. I have actually stopped using iMovie, because using an online MP4 converter does the trick as well. It's just one extra step I'd rather not have to deal with in the future if there's another, more simple fix.

My iPad screen resolution is 2048×1536 pixels at 264 ppi (Retina Display). I suspect 1800x1152 is going to be problematic for rendering and display. For the task that you described, I would use 1280x720. Do any of these files work?

The first and last do work, however the one labeled "Apple TV" does not. I then attempted to render mine at the "Internet 720p" preset, yet I was unable to get that to send...

(I don't know what I was thinking, but I meant to say 1536x1152; 0.75 iPad resolution. Is that still bad?)

1280X720 will be fine for the task that you describe. I would always stick to "standard" video pixel dimensions. Don't get hung up on the native resolution of the iPad.

Okay, so I just attempted to send two versions of a video, both at 720p, using the "Internet 720p" and the "Apple TV 720p" and neither of them delivered in iMessage. Did you do anything differently when you rendered the files that you sent to me?

Never mind! I tested a ton of different presets and realized that I needed to be using Sony AVC/MVC rather than AVC/AAC. Maybe this is obvious to other people, but I really have no idea what the difference is. Anyway, it works now at a good bitrate and even the different resolution. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

I'm glad you made some sense of it.

If you were using Mainconcept AVC with the its templates and that did not work and the Sony AVC templates did work then I would guess that it is the Slices parameter. For some reason the MC AVC templates defaults to 4 slices even for basic "internet" templates. Who knows why. Sony AVC defaults to 1.

There is hardly ever a reason to use more than one slice and one slice gives better compression. The only thing I know that requires slices is Blu-ray and it wants 4.
