Rendering

Hello again.

I recently created an animatic by first scanning my storyboard into Adobe Photoshop, resolution set to 200.

I saved the scans as "targa" so that I could import them into Vegas 4.0.

I put the drawings in order on the timeline, then rendered the animatic in two different formats.... .wmv for mediaplayer 9 and .mov for quicktime.

The quicktime version was slow and is very jumpy.

The mediaplayer version was smooth, but the viewing window is too small.

I had to download them to my school's ftp site. The media player version went in a jiff while the quicktime version took so long that it timed out.... despite well over 4 hours of downloading.

What gives?

There are tons of factors involved here that you haven't even mentioned. What size (in MB) are the files? What bitrates did you use when rendering? Probably the biggest one is bitrate. Either format should download and play nicely if they are rendered at similar bitrates. If you happened to render the quicktime version with a very high bitrate and the .wmv file with a low bitrate it would explain most of the trouble you're having. You could probably use a somewhat bigger bitrate for the .wmv file and also set the frame size larger (320x240, for example). Probably a good bitrate for downloadable videos is 256Kbps or 512Kbps for short movies (under 10 minutes). If your movie is longer than that then you'll probably want to use a lower rate to keep the file size down.

Another newbie question about rendering. I'm about to render my first video. It's 80 minutes long and using a bitrate calculator the average calculated bitrate is 7413 and the max bitrate is 9346. Where do I enter these figures. In VV4 from the "render as">"custom" tab I see bitrate figures but they seem to be defaults.

blk diesel, you have to click on the "Variable bit rate" button to activate the variable bit rate settings. Then you'll be able to change them.
