rendering a layer keeping bg transparent

There is a lot I don't know about Vegas although I've been using it for a while now.
I was wanting to render two layers of text (photoshop image with transparent bg) together with an effect but leave the bg still transparent. So I can use this text effect on a few different bgs.
Do I do this with masking? Or is it to do with Alpha layers? Or am I completely off?
If anyone can help I would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.

make sure there's no background behind your text (IE you don't have a black layer under it, it's really transparent) & then render to something with alpha support. IE PNG, uncompressed AVI, etc. That should work.

Similar problem. I want a small intro (MPEG2) to play on top of a DVDA menu. Problem is, the fade in/outs are to black, and I'd like it to be to transparent. How do I get Vegas to do this?
