Rendering AVCHD and confused

Using a Canon HG20 to create AVCHD files, 1920x1080 at 25fps. I edit a clip and render it to MainConcept MPEG-2 using the Blue Ray 1920x1080-50i, 25mps template. When I open the output file in Windows Media Player, it is surrounded by a large field of black as if it has shrunk and has what appears to be 4:3 aspect ration instead of 16:9.

I'm fairly new to video editing (using Vegas 10 HD Platinum) so am having trouble keeping track of all the variables. Can anyone suggest why I get the results above? How do project settings impact the files you render? It seems like most settings are specified when you make the movie. Thanks.

Perhaps your project properties are set to a 4:3 format. Vegas will shrink the 16:9 source to fit within the taller rectangle. Then when you render this project to 16:9, Vegas will shrink the 4:3 frame to fit in the wider rectangle.

Make sure your project properties are set to a widescreen format, preferably one that matches the output, the input, or both.
