Rendering Bitrate

I am putting together a compilation of videos onto a DVD and at the default bitrate they are too big to fit on one 4.7 GB DVD and i dont want to have to split it. The default bitrate is 8.00 mbps but what would look good, as vegas captures at about 3.4 mbps? Some of the files are more precious than other (i.e i want to keep some at full quality but dont mind so much about reducing others).
Many Thanks

What I would do:

1) Render the critical files (the ones you want t the highest quality) in Vegas, as MPEG-2 using the stock DVD templates, and load those in DVDA.

2) Render the not-so-important files as .avi DV, then load those into DVDA.

3) In the DVDA optimize window, selectively tweak the bitrate for the .avi files until everything fits.

4) Encoding all of your audio as AC-3 also helps save space, so try that too (assuming you aren't already using AC-3).

Vegas captures at 3.4 megaBYTES/sec, so there's quite a bit of compression going on even to get to 8 megaBITS/sec.
