Rendering DV Type 1 avi's

pwashburn wrote on 11/26/2000, 10:48 AM
How do I set Vegas Video (2.0b) up to render to a Type 1 DV
file rather than the Type 2 it seems to default to. I've
looked at all the options under the Custom button and can't
find anything that lets me save as a Type 1. Changing the
interleave interval doesn't seem to have any effect on the
Type 1 vs Type 2. Unclicking "Create an OpenDML..."
doesn't have any effect. Where am I missing it?

I've just moved over from Ulead's Media Studio Pro 6.0
where I can create either a Type 1 or Type 2 DV avi, so I'm
pretty sure it's not the hardware.

I'm on an IBM 770, capturing with a RATOC CBFW1 from a Sony
GVC900 DV deck. Using the MS DV drivers with DirectX 8.

Seems a shame (and waste of time) to have to go back to MSP
6.0 just to convert the VV Type 2's to Type 1's so I can
write back to tape.

Vegas Video only renders Type 2 DV avi files. Our Video Capture
application defaults to capturing Type 1 DV avi files, however there
is a Capture preference to capture Type 2 DV avi files. You
shouldn't have to convert from Printing to Tape, since Video Capture
prints both Type 1 and Type 2 DV avi files. Why specific Print to
tape problems are you seeing? Have you tried a different device?

After reinstalling Video Capture (2.0b), I can now Print to Tape the
Type 2 DV avi files. However, there's no audio!! Type 1 DV files
pass the audio, but several Type 2's I checked don't. Some option I've
missed?

Again, my hardware is:
IBM Thinkpad 770Z,
RATOC CBFW1 Cardbus firewire card
Sony GVD900 DV deck
MS DV drivers with DirectX 8.

There was a known bug starting in DX8 RC 0 where no audio would get
printed to tape with Type-2 DV avi files. We communicated the
problem in time to MS and they have fixed the problem on their end in
the released version of DX8. If you haven't updated to the full
release runtime or SDK please try it out. From testing we've done
this was verified as being fixed.

Thanks!

Downloaded DirectX8 from Microsoft today. No change to problem.
Still no audio in Type 2 DV avi's with Video Capture's Print To Tape.

qdv.dll that I have in c:\windows\system shows Properties of:
File Version: 6.03.01.0183
Size: 225KB
Date: 09/22/00

Clip that was rendered is a Type 1 DV and has audio

Interestingly, I had the old, DirectX 7 version of qdv.dll archived
on my computer and when i brought it back in, my Type 2 DV avi Print
To Tape problems when away: I've got audio!!!!

So the DirectX 8 version I have is the culprit. I did get access to
just the DirectX 8 version of qdv.dll earlier, not the whole DirectX
8. Wonder if this confuses the DirectX 8 install program?

Could someone tell me what the official qdv.dll version, size, date
is?

The released version of qdv.dll, found on my Win98SE system, is
6.03.01.0400 dated 11/03/2000 and has the no audio problem fixed.
The DX8 one you have is from RC 1, which has the no audio problem.
If you have access to a high bandwith connection, you may want to
download the entire DX8 SDK and install the DX8 SDK redistributable
runtime (\redist\dxsetup.exe), since it not only updates qdv.dll and
other DirectShow components (which also contains an updated DV
codec), but also the updated MSDV.sys driver (now provides PAL
support). Note, that just installing the End-user DX8 runtimes
doesn't update the MSDV.sys driver.
