Rendering Information Sources

I am new to video production and was wondering if anyone knows of a good source that clearly explains all the different rendering formats and their uses. NTSC DV, PAL SD YUV, etc... So many different ones to choose from I'd like to make better choices from the start instead of trial and error. Thanks

If you let us know what your source video is, its format and what you plan to do with it after you edit (watch on DVD, upload to YouTube, etc), we can recommend render settings.

My source video is AVCHD. I am looking to view primarily on DVD.

If you mean a standard definition DVD, then follow DSE's advice here:

"Import your AVCHD or HDI format to a 1440 x 1080 (HDV) timeline, edit, then output to an NTSC Widescreen template, checking the "Do Not Letterbox" option in the render dialog." (Make Movie)

I do that all that time for 1440x1080 footage. DSE is right on.

However, I wonder if the footage is actually 1920x1080, if that should be where the project starts rather than 1440x1080.

Excellent, thank you. The online tutorials will help alot. One last question... There are a few tutorials (for purchase) that look like they might be helpful. I'd like your thoughts if you know anything about these two:
