Rendering Issues with Somewhat Complex Layering ???

Thomas-Monks wrote on 3/30/2023, 10:34 AM

Greetings,

I'm running a 2GHz laptop Asus Vivobook, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, WIN 11. I have 2 questions. Per the preview photo, I'm taking a hippy bus (static), background (static) and adding-in 6 green-screen HD videos of cartoon dogs doing their routine (also a duck on top, lol). These are highly compressed from full HD down to their tiny window after chromakey. What you see is these formerly HD chromakey boxes, Horizontal flips everywhere to get them looking on other direction, picture-in-pictured down to their small window. The entire window of that input is black for most. When scrolling through the timeline, different boxes turn black and others become black. The entire finished segment is 20 seconds.

I am rendering in HD using the AMD graphics processor to crunch the numbers. I thank you in advance for help with the following:

1) Little else is running and only 20% CPU and 50% memory are being used. Is there anyway to increase system usage to get through this ?

2) After starting rending at 4am, frames 0-12 calculated pretty quickly, maybe 1 or 2 minutes... then stuck on frame 13 for the past 4 hours (now 8am). I see a lot going on as it's using 20% of CPU 0.6-1.9 GB RAM and these numbers do change, so there's a 'Whole lot of something' going on...

Any suggestions or help for me to understand what's going on at frame 13 (of 600) ? Thanks in advance ! Tom.

What is the harddrive usage?

Thomas-Monks wrote on 3/30/2023, 11:28 AM

SSD, 80GB remaining... < 0.5% used always per the screenshot. Thanks for the question :-)

How about trying to render from the point where it seems to be stalled?

yes, this info was during rendering... I guess so many layers take a while ? It's been running for 6.5 hours now at home. It's definitely crunching lots of numbers about something in Vegas... When rendering, uses 20% CPU, <50% RAM, around 0.10% SDD hard drive. I had it render to GPU hoping it would be happier... I'm glad I didn't render in 4K, LOL

What is the specific make and model of your CPU and GPU. Guessing you are using a laptop, which will thermal throttle when hammered. Open Task Manager (which you did) and see what your hardware is actually doing and include your GPU. You can see what your specific CPU and GPU are in the Performance tab.

@Thomas-Monks Hi,

What did you do to reverse/flip the clips to make them look in the other direction?

How do you know it's failing the render at fr13? Vegas render dialogue only shows the % done, doesn't it?

& if your pc is struggling with this, consider rendering out your project in small parts, the events with chromakey could be rendered with ProRes that has an alpha included, then when reimported those clips will have a transparent background, I'd use MagicYUV because the Vegas ProRes produces big files but it is built in & you should have it, whereas MagicYUV is a paid for product.

I WISH it was 13 seconds, which if frame 389. It runs pretty good at 1fps, until frame 13. II will have an update in an hour or so. Question, what's the major overhead drain? a) Chromakey full frame HD x 7 ? b) Squeezing 7 full frame HD down to something ridiculous like 150x150 - 7 times ?

Former user wrote on 3/30/2023, 3:33 PM

@Thomas-Monks Ooops I've had mine set to Absolute Frames for a while & wasn't thinking, I've edited my comment, doh! 🤣🤣🤦‍♂️

I tried recreating your project with a few green screen events with chromakey but it rendered too fast for me to see any lag, tat's why i was asking about the reverse effect you've added,

Out of those 2 options a) Chromakey would be the biggest drain, but it shouldn't run into hrs like you're having,

you need to share your full pc specs tho, so can you click your icon at the top of this page - My Profile & fill in your Signature with the full name of your CPU, GPU & amount of RAM, also inc the Windows & Vegas version, this will then show at the bottom of your comments,

I used the following: Next to the Fx button on each segment, there is like a # button which I never use. I guess it's a pan and crop thing ?? I don't know... but I saw on you tube the to go there and right click and you can flip vert or horiz... trying to get updates from home... after 6 hours running... I can see that it would take a lot of horsepower to flip each pixel on the 7, for each frame at HD

@Thomas-Monks Hi, just thought I'd share -

I created this, I was changing things & adding more events then rendering each change, I rendered it about 12 times, 3 times it got stuck rendering & I had to Cancel render which then resulted in Vegas becoming unresponsive, but it rendered ok when i tried it again after relaunching Vegas, ,

(ignore the crap chromakey, I paid no attention to detail)

I'll keep trying to see if i can work out what makes it not want to render 🤷‍♂️

Former user wrote on 3/30/2023, 4:31 PM

@Thomas-Monks Ok I flipped everything using Pan/Crop right click, rendered it 8 times, it got stuck 7 times & had to be closed with Taskmanager after cancelling render 👍

On the last go I tried Building dynamic ram, it got stuck at 68%,

I'd try rendering each flipped track separately, Vegas doesn't seem to like doing these 🤷‍♂️

AH HA ! So that's the problem..FLIPPING ! Makes sense.

Thanks folks, I will try that and update you tonight. I will prerender in reverse horiz.

Question, there a way for Vegas to utilize more system resources which are sitting idle, such as CPU and RAM ?

Former user wrote on 3/30/2023, 6:15 PM

@Thomas-Monks Nope I don't believe so, people suggest changing some settings like putting Dynamic ram to 0 & turning on or off Legacy HEVC/AVC in the File IO settings to make Vegas play smoother but there's no max utilize type button,. My system often only uses a fraction of what is available, different systems work better than others, that's why you need to share your PC specs.

No there isn't. VEGAS uses what it needs.

I used to have an ongoing project with kids where I did really complex compositing with up tp 15 layers / tracks of masked drawings, green screens etc. Vegas would usually get through the rendering, but at times everything would get seriously messed up, black frames, masks all over the place, green frames, it would also sometimes get stuck at some point in the rendering, and so on.

One of the culprits sometimes was non quantized frames, which seem to very much disturb Vegas in complex calculations, and another solution used to be the good old Dynamic RAM to zero, and, yes, I'm afraid, GPU OFF for the rendering.

=== HI EVERYONE ===

Yep, as expected...I returned home from work and found a stuck machine at frame 13. GID WAS CORRECT...It was the horizontal flipping x7 which caused havoc. THANK EVERYONE HERE !!! I returned home, prerendered the 'flips' (they were totally system extensive, even 1 at a time). Everything came out awesome, and I'm really pleased. This is my open for a AKC Dog Show in June, called Woofstock in Vallejo, CA. It's the 3rd largest show in the USA, behind Westminster and the AKC National Championships.

Nope, this is just for home videos of our dogs and the Yorkshire Club of Northern California. Not bad for amateur work using only Vegas 19 and MS Paintbrush...lol :-) THANKS AGAIN FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART !!! TOM :-)
