rendering only 1 clip by creating region??

I have a busy time line with video overlays and sound. I know I can make a region selection and choose to render to loop selection, but how do I prevent the the audio or other video overlays from being rendered this way? Can't I just select a clip so that it renders nothing but what i selected?

No, but you could "solo" the track(s) the clip is on. This effectively mutes all the other tracks and the rendering process won't even see that they exist. The solo button is the ! on the track header, right next to the mute button.
