Rendering problems

I'm having a reocurring problem with rendering intensive projects and intensive codecs. Ver 9 seems to be worse than ver 8. Maybe because 9 uses the processors more.

After the rendering really starts cooking up, my monitors lose video signal from my ATI video cards.

First one card dies then a second later the other one dies.

But the computer keeps running.

I'm not sure if the renders complete or not.

I'm just fishing for a little extra help in trouble shooting.

Do I have an overheating problem on the processor?

Do I have an overheating problem on the cards?

Do I not have enough power?

Do I have a faulty graphics driver?

Has this happened to anyone else?

Are you sure that you don't have the monitors set to power off as part of a power scheme? I think windows sets this as default.

Are you overclocking your 4850s or your i7?

I've deactivated all the power schemes.

no overclocking, but I live in a very hot climate
but even with aircon full blast (room temp ~20 degrees C) it is still happening.

It doesn't seem like an overheating issue, because I assume the processor would overheat and trigger a restart (i've had that before)

this is just shutting off the monitors, and they won't turn back on

Your processor can still keep running even if your graphics card does not. A 20 deg C ambient temperature is rather high and if both of your 4850s are right next to each other with no space, they potentially could overheat. While you are rendering you could run the Catalyst Control Center and on the tab called "ATI Overdrive", monitor the card temperature and fan values. If all looks well, it's not a thermal issue.
