Rendering - speed and CPU usage

When I render a longer project I set the priority of moviest40.exe to high. This increases the rendering programs CPU percentage from approx 45 to above 50. Do any of You know how to squeeze more CPU percentage out to the rendering process?
My CPU is an 2.8 GHz Pentium with 1 MB cache and 1 GB RAM.
Normally I render approx 6-9 minutes of 720x576 PAL video per hour - mostly a mix of stills and videoclips - do any of You render faster? and how?

I've a 3.0 GHz P4 with half the memory you've got, which renders to MPEG2 almost in real time. Typical cpu utilisation is around 90%. What's your disk configuration - you may have an IO bottleneck? AV and firewall software can reduce the performance too. Before you increase the process priority, what's competing for the cpu?
