At the moment I am rendering mpeg-2 video and AC3 audio separately.

Why? - And yes, this is when you want to produce a DVD. And yes, we sure can "Rendering Video and audio together" So, what is it you want to end up with?

If you just want to produce a file that plays on a large number of devices use the Mainconcept AVC/AAC Internet template that closely matches your source pixel dimensions and frame rate.

If you're producing separate elementary streams so you can produce DVDs or Blu-ray discs, all is not lost. You can use a program like tsMuxer to wrap the separate video and audio files into a .ts or .m2ts wrapper.

Typically, the audio file type for DVD and BluRay is AC-3 or PCM (.wav). For the web and other streaming scenarios.. AAC. If that's rendered separately from the video it usually has the <.mp4> or <.m4a> extension. FWIW, I use MeGUI to mux in AAC audio to a AVC video

And yet again, the OP hasn’t offered, provided what it is that is being wanted. All we are doing here is second guessing. Right?

Right Grazie. but it's all to common for folks to ask a question with few specifics. My automotive analogy, "Why won't my car start".
