Rendering with AMD VCE problems

Jonathan-Burnett wrote on 2/3/2020, 10:45 AM

I'm using Vegas Pro 17.0 Build 387

When I attempt to render with MAGIX AVC/AAC MP4 (Internet UHD 2160p 29.97 fps (AMD VCE), I get a popup message saying "An error occurred while creating the media file..." "The reason for the error could not be determined".

Looking at the GPU log all looks good until I see these messages:

INFO 2020-02-03 00:37:33 Device is compatible.
INFO 2020-02-03 00:37:33 This is the selected device.

If I use any other rendering choice, I don't get the error and the file I'm trying to create gets built. I'd really like to see my GPU get used as renderings are so slow! In case it matters, here's the AMD GPU I'm using: AMD Radeon R9 200 Series

See if updating your GPU drivers helps.

Systems:

Desktop

AMD Ryzen 7 1800x 8 core 16 thread at stock speed

64GB 3000mhz DDR4

Geforce RTX 3090

Windows 10

Laptop:

ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo 32GB (9980HK CPU, RTX 2060 GPU, dual 4K touch screens, main one OLED HDR)

Here's your card:

Architecture Codename: Volcanic Islands
Codename: Ibiza
CLRX Version: GCN 1.1
Graphics/Compute: GFX7 (gfx701 GL) / (gfx702)
Display Core Engine: 8.5
Unified Video Decoder: 4.2
Video Compression Engine: 2.0

Here's the Vegas 17 min requirements:

AMD/ATI

AMD/ATI® Radeon with 4 GB and VCE 3.0 or higher (Radeon Pro series with 8 GB for HDR and 32 bit projects - This isn't actually true, my Radeon 7 does 32 bit & HDR fine)

The $200 hardware solution to a software problem.

The AMD Radeon R9 200 is over 6 years old (2013 era) so your two options are to use an older version of Vegas or get a newer GPU... IMO a RX580, like @john_dennis recommended, is not a good bang/buck card for $200 with only 2304 stream processors when you can get a RX570 for around $120 that has similar performance...

Or you can hunt around for a VEGA 56 for $250 or VEGA 64 for $360 at NewEgg which will give you much better performance with 3584/4096 Stream Processors... (You have to have a decent power supply though...) I found a refurbished, but like-new liquid-cooled VEGA 64 for $350 at Newegg & it performs very close to a Radeon 7 n VEGAS...

Newer mid-range cards like the 5700 XT for $350-$400 are actually better for gaming & use less power, but with only 2560 stream processors, they don't perform as well for compute tasks, Vegas Video, etc. We'll need to wait on the next high end cards from Nvidia & AMD which are due later this year...

--$360 11700K @ 5.0ghz
--$200 ASRock W480 Creator (onboard 10G net, TB3, etc.)
Borrowed from my 9900K until prices drop:
--32GB of G.Skill DDR4 3200 ($100 on Black Friday...)
Reused from same Tower Case that housed the Xeon:
--Used VEGA 56 GPU ($200 on eBay before mining craze...)
--Noctua Cooler, 750W PSU, OS SSD, LSI RAID Controller, SATAs, etc.

Performs VERY close to my overclocked 9900K (below), but at stock settings with no tweaking...

Workstation D with $1,350 USD of upgrades in April, 2019
--$500 9900K @ 5.0ghz

--$200 open box Asus Z390 WS (PLX chip manages 4/5 PCIe slots)
--$160 32GB of G.Skill DDR4 3000 (added another 32GB later...)
--$350 refurbished, but like-new Radeon Vega 64 LQ (liquid cooled)

"I'd really like to see my GPU get used as renderings are so slow!"

Listen to @TheRhino. Especially, if you intend to use hardware (VCE) encoding. The RX570 is likely to be more cost effective and produce similar results.

Unfortunately, while upgrading from 2xx to 5xx B-frames support will be lost.

I very much appreciate all the input from everyone who contributed. I've learned more than a thing or two! After reviewing your input as well as a number of other sources regarding Vega 64 vs. Radeon 7, I've order the Vega 64 to give it a whirl. Once I get this implemented, I'll update you on how well this solved my problem. Thank you!
