Replace Transition Doesn't Do Anything?

Maestro wrote on 11/17/2003, 3:22 PM
I have two clips that are end to end on a video track, I have the default replace transition time set at 0.5 seconds, but when I try to change the cut to a crossfade, nothing happens. "Undo Replace Transition" will appear in the undo list, but other than that, nothing at all happens on the timeline.

I've tried replacing the transition with a dissolve, but that just adds a 0.5 second dissolve at the end of the first clip and leaves the second one untouched. I've used this feature countless times in the past with no problem.

Anyone else seen this or have an idea what on Earth I'm doing wrong?

Thanks everyone.

Do both videos have enough "handle" to overlap for the dissolve?

If the 2 clips are "end to end" then there is no overlap, right? I think you have to sliide the second one a bit to the left so that the 2 clips merge into each other. Vegas will make this merged section a crossfade by default. Now, if you change to a different type of transition it should show a difference.

Yup...just like with what jaegersing is saying - from what it sounds like you are saying - you are never going to get a transition.

The clips HAVE to overlap in order for them to transition from one to the other.

That is if you want to see one fade out with the other fading in.

If they are but up against each other...then you are only adding a transition to the end of one clip...and nothing to the other.

Actually, you can have two clips butting up to each other end to end and create a crossfade between them with one keypress. In Preferences|Editing, there's a default time and mode for such transition changes. I used the feature extensively on two other projects, and actually, finally got it to work again on this one.

I BELIEVE the problem had something to do with a slight overlap or gap that existed between the two clips at a microscopic level. Zooming WAAAAY in to the very magnified frame level didn't even reveal the problem. However, if I dragged the end of one clip back and then forward again, then did the same to the other clip, THEN tried the transition key, it worked. I guess sometimes Vegas just gets screwed up on its frame alignment.

I would however, like to know if anyone else has experienced this just so I know I'm not going nuts.

Thanks,

You are referring to the / key, yes?

Yeah, sometimes it works, sometimes it do not :-(
