Replacing a background without a greenscreen

Hey All. I'm using Vegas Pro 20 build 411. I had to do some recording with my cell phone due to technical difficulties during an award ceremony. So I had to re-record at a different location with next to no notice and none of the gear that was on site (ie no green screen)

My question is, is it possible for me to take this background image and put it behind these people to replace that crazy backdrop? They move around a little so I'm not sure if just using masking is appropriate here. I thought about just cropting the sides but even then not 100% sure on how to go about it. I just don't want the video to look too horrible lol.

@kyle-pitts, hopefully you're using VEGAS Pro 21. If so, take a look at this video to see how to use the new Z-Depth plug-in as a custom compositor. At about the three-minute mark it does exactly what you are trying to do.

Nope, I haven't made that move. I use vegase a few times per year and bought it for myself. i was on movie studio 17 for years and then jumped to pro 20 and now it wants me to buy 21 but for me I cannot justify the cost since I upgraded probably only a year ago. But I will look into this.

Oops...sorry, I missed that in your original post. In that case, you'll want to investigate something like what @lan-mLMC suggests. You could do it with Bezier Masking, but it would be a very time-consuming frame-by-frame process.
