Rerendering avi files and grouping

Am I correct that I can rerender avi files without losing quality? Additionally, does anyone else have a difficult time grouping objects? Could someone send me detailed directions on grouping objects. I have a lot of objects on several timelines and need to make room for more objects at the beginning of the project. Wouldn't it be nice to have a tool that could do this with one click?

If you are doing absolutely nothing other than butting the files up together or trimming, then there will be no loss of quality because Vegas will simply copy the frames bit-for-bit to the new output file.

If you have any fades, crossfades, titles, effects, transitions, filters, compositing, levels adjustment, etc. then Vegas will have to decompress and recompress.

Vegas's grouping ability is very primitive. You basically get one level of grouping and it's the same as grouping an Audio/Video stream. It seems better to avoid this bug-like feature.

If you group 20 events together it will be very difficult to ungroup them without breaking the A/V stream links. So your audio will become very easy to move out of sync.

Rather than using the grouping tools to move everything down the timeline, you have several other options. You can "Insert Time", You can select all and then move everything, or you can just select the first event and move it-then ripple edit the rest of it.

Review the ripple edit options. I prefer to manually ripple edit but it depends on your situation.
