The limit is entirely subjective. Each time you rerender from a compressed format you will lose some quality. How much quality loss you can stand is up to you and your audience. Obviously one additional generation didn't bother you any. The best way for you to find out is to try several generations of MPEG-2 renders and judge for yourself when it starts getting too bad to use. You might want to have a few other people take a look as well so you're not depending entirely on your own judgement.
