Resizing the original captured file

Probably a real basic question, new user that I am...

How does one destructively edit/resize a video clip?

Suppose I capture some home movies (using my new canopus advc-55) via the capture tool. The captured file is say five minutes long, and after viewing and editing I decide that I only want to use 30 seconds. When I trim to create a 30 clip in VMS, the original file stays untouched, as it should, by design. But suppose I *want* to make that original file smaller so as not to use up disk space, etc. Is there way to do this. In other words, how can I edit and resize the actual captured file? Can I d this in vegas or do I need a different tool?

Thanks in advance!

If you have captured in avi, edited and saved the segment in avi, then you will not have lost any of the original video quality. After saving and checking to make sure the video segment is what you want you can just delete the original unedited video. I don't think you can edit the actual original file itself in VMS.

But if I delete the original file, then in Vegas/VMS the media is considered "offline", and needs to be recaptured or replaced, etc. Thus, the large media file needs to be there even though I only need a small portion of it. It seems like deleting the entire file would only be a solution if I have finished with the project... Is there anyway around this other than just being more careful in only captuing what is needed?

If you aren't finished with the original file. Then you will have to keep it. But if you have created another video file of the segment you intend to use then you would simply place that video file itself into a project instead of a vms vf file from the original file into a project. Of course if you are going to be using parts of the original file that have not themselves been made into video files you will have to keep the original file.

How do I create "another video file of the segment I intend to use"? Do I do this in Vegas/VMS?

Yes. Choose the parts you want to keep just the same as if you were editing a video. Render to a new AVI file.

After you have that segment of the original video that you intend to use in the timeline, click the 'Make Movie' button. Then just name the file what you want and save it where you'll remember. VMS will then render that selected segment into a new video file. You should save it as an avi file, so as to not lose any video quality.
