Resolution Mish-Mash

OK, I've been researching which resolutions for which video sources and I have to tell you its rediculously confusing. First off, let me list the video sources in question and their associated resolutions from various sources.

Sattelite
364x240 (NTSC Max for DBS)
704x480 (DirecTV MPEG2)
???x??? (TIVO, ReplayTV, Dish Network PVR) Anybody know?

VHS
352x480 (S-VHS standard)
240x482 (NTSC Max for VHS)
400x482 (NTSC Max for S-VHS)
352x480 (TV Max displayable, obviously n/a for HDTV's, LCD's)

DVD Compliance
352x480 (DVD Compliant)
704x480 (DVD Standard, Hollywood production DVDs)
720x480 (DVD Compliant, DVD-A compliant)

OK, are you confused yet?

What I want to do is:
1) Capture from production and homemade VHS and Dish Network DBS.
2) Convert and save to DVD.

Do I have to use the DVD-A compliant 720x480? And, should I use the same resolution for capture as Vegas project template?
(DVD-A template 720x480 results in only about 90 minutes of video on a DVD5 disc and there are no DVD9 burners yet.)

I have captured from Dish Network DVR at 352x240 and it looks pretty damn good, on a computer monitor, unless you blow it up passed 1024x768.

Also for VHS (or S-VHS), it seems to make more sense to use 352x480 and bump up the bitrate for cleaner capture. Does this make sense when using Vegas+DVD ???

Is converting to 24p better than 60i format? How much will a DVD5 hold at 24p?

Sorry for the long post.

It look like that your analog capture device(card, box) support 320x240 for web, but not for video editing in dv format. If your capture device support 720x480 (standard NTSC DV) then capture all your images in that format.
ATI 7500 with tv tuner is less that $100-get one.

I have an ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon 9800 Pro. I like it but it can be a little quirky. Advice: Make sure you install your sound card FIRST.

My inputs are from Dish Network PVR unit via S-Video, resolution unknown. The files on the unit's disk are MPEG2 but who knows what it outputs. Other input is from an S-VHS player via S-Video 352x480 I guess.

If you capture it as 720x480 it won't matter if the source if 10x10. It will STILL fill the 720x480, just like when playing on a TV. The PVR has no clue you're outputing to a capture card. I've done this with VHS, Super VHS, BetaCamSP, and several others and it doesn't matter what the origional sourse "resolution" is (analog doesn't have a resolution i guess).
