Restoring deleted presets

Gregory-Hastings wrote on 3/12/2025, 1:48 PM

Is there any way to restore a video effect preset that has accidentally been deleted?

I save custom presets that I want to use frequently. But sometime, after applying that preset, I accidentally click the little red X that deletes that preset rather than the X in the red square above it to close the preset dialog box. And that instantly deletes that preset!

That is a deficiency in Vegas...it should request confirmation before deleting any preset.

When that happens, I have to recreate that custom preset. Is there some way to save/export custom presets so they can be restored easily?

@Gregory-Hastings Hi, Undo will normally restore a lost preset if you haven't started a new project, but look in C:\Users\gidjo\OneDrive\Documents\OFX Presets (ignore the 'Onedrive' bit, that's just a folder on my PC, yours might be different.) You could copy & paste this folder to a safe place as back-up.

Hi, it seems a little more complicated than that. If I realize I did it at the time, the Undo will restore it. But, if I move on and do some other edits, I can't see that edit in order to undo it.

I've just recently upgraded to VP23. It seems to me that I used to be able to see a list of the edit history, but maybe I'm thinking of some other program. Is there a way to see a list of the edit history?

I've also discovered that if I go back to a previous clip where I applied that preset, it still exists there (go figure). I can re-save it there.

I have found a way to restore the preset!

If I have used that preset before, in the current project OR any other project, I can find that preset in a clip where it was applied. And then re-save it.

It appears that custom presets are saved in a clip to which they are applied. And when the preset is saved, it is available for future use in other clips. If that preset is deleted, it is no longer available for future use...but it is still in any clips to which it was applied, and can be resaved.

@Gregory-Hastings I had my doubts about this so I saved & closed a project with a test preset applied, opened a new project, applied that test preset, deleted that preset from the x button, closed that project & re-opened the orig project & yes the test preset was still there, but you have to save it immediately, any change to the drop-down box of that fx deletes that preset. You can always open the saved project again I guess providing you don't save it before closing.

That's only any good if you have that preset saved in a project, & if it isn't a recent project you have to go looking for it opening projects to find it. Making a duplicate of the OFX Presets folder is a more permanent solution, providing you update that back-up regularly.

The only thing I can find that looks like an OFX Presets folder is in C:\Program Files\Vegas\Vegas Pro 22.0\OFX Video Plug-ins. There are several folders under that which are labeled "presets", but none of the files in those folders have current date/time stamps in their "Date Modified" property. So I don't think I have found the files I need to back-up.

@Gregory-Hastings As Gid indicated the folder is in your User\Documents folder or if you use OneDrive User\OneDrive\Documents.

Ok, now I found it. Vegas created a folder \Documents\Vegas, so I was looking in there. That would be the logical place for it. But...no, they put it out on its own. Go figure.
