Revert to previous edit - Is this possible?

Joni wrote on 5/17/2007, 12:23 AM
Hi,

We were working on a project and it was almost finished.
Then a colleague tried to add some stills to the end, applied some effects from Ultimate S (Photo Montage) and saved, then closed Vegas.
What happened was that the photo montage effects affected 95 events on another video track, setting the size of all events to 7secs. The whole project is ruined.

Is there a way to revert the project to point before those actions were made?
(note that undo and history is unavailable).

We're using Vegas7.

thanks

Joni

No, not that I know of, not without manually sequentially saving?

That is why, on big-money-earning projects I save sequentially. I do this depending on the complexity of the project and the resources I may be eating up with things like stills of LARGE format.

I don't see anyway other way of going about this?

However, this isn't really your enquiry. You want YOUR project back!

If your session crashed and you tried unsuccessfully to reopen it, DO seek out the associated *.BAK file. These files DO get saved and I have often been relieved to find out that my "last" stuff has been spirited safely away. Sometimes these don't get the opportunity to come up when you re-fire-up Vegas.

I now have my Vegas/Temp folder directly situated under my C: . So, C:\TempVegas and that's it!

Another thing, when you HAVE located your BAK file is to see just how much "crud" and stuff HAS been left amongst the TEMP folder. There could quite well be HUNDREDS of dormant UNDO buffer files not having been deleted. These SHOULD have been auto deleted when you exit Vegas. Now that I've got my VEGASTEMP folder to hand, I can have it open and I can actually see/view just what IS and what ISN'T going on. Very reassuring it is too! I can see DO and UNDO buffer files being created on the hop AND my BAKs too!

Go find that BAK veg! It could now very well have a string of numbers instead of your ProjectName at the front o0f the file name.

Good luck! . and in the meantime save sequentially? Please <wink>?

Thanks Grazie,

Unfortunately Vegas never crashed.
Anyway, will look for those .bak files.
I always save ofter with different names ie. proj1, proj2, proj3 etc.
This was being edited by some colleagues here, and when they called me to help I kind of knew that that project was gone. It is a pity, the project was over 1 hour, with thousands of edited events. They are starting from scratch.

kind regards
Joni

But what about the simple undo steps. Vegas creates lots of undo files and they are stored in a folder even after having closed Vegas. So even starting that saved Vegas project should give you the ability to undo steps which you maybe did days before.

Edit
Sorry, I see Grazie already adressed the undo thing.

yeah . . Marco, kinda Undo the Undo! - You really should try having the folder open and watch the traffic going on in there as you work in Vegas! Openned my eyes!

You made me curious. I'll have my eyes wide opened next time.

MarcoB 5/17/2007 4:57:33 AM: "Vegas creates lots of undo files and they are stored in a folder even after having closed Vegas."

When I reopen Vegas there are no undo steps. I can only undo what i do in that session. Is there some way to reinstall the undo steps from the previous session? (If this is the case then surely that is Joni's solution. But she said undo was unavailable.)

The "Undos" should be being kept in your TEMP directory/folder you have set up within Options>Prefs>General .

Ooops, you are right! Sorry, I had in my mind it would work this easy way.

I know this doesn't help your current problem, but here's a tip that has saved my bacon more than once.
I use the Excalibur set of scripts, and one is inappropriately named "emergency backup". When you click on this tools icon it makes a timestamped .veg file. It takes a couple of seconds, but I can go back in the project to any saved point in the past.

I can find the files, but is there any way to import the last undo file back into Vegas when re-opening? Seems like it should be possible if you do it before doing anything that could be "undone". I kind of sense this is not possible because by now someone would have explained how.

To save a long search on the issue I will just give a short answer - download TortoiseCVS. Works great and I use it daily when editing.
